Roundabout Road Type Question

Postby willsca » Thu Aug 23, 2012 8:09 am

Hello all, I haven't had a lot of experience with roundabouts yet, and I wasn't able to find the answer to my question in the wiki, so I'm hoping some of you with some more experience have run into this before. If a roundabout intersects with multiple road types, which should be used? The one I'm looking at has a minor highway that enters on one side and exits on the opposite side, as well as a standard street that enters perpendicular to the highway.

I would say to use the highest road type that passes through the roundabout, so in your case, a Minor Highway.

If, for example, a roundabout had 1 Minor Highway & 3 Primary Streets, I would go with Primary, because that type passes through, while the Minor Highway starts/ends there...

Highest type (except for Freeway) is the general guideline. I'll update the wiki to contain that info...

EDIT -- Roundabout wiki page updated.

EDIT 2 -- I am clarifying what I added and putting some examples in.

Okay, I've updated the wiki page with a new approach at the "rules" for road type of a Roundabout. What I have written is basically:

* Identify the two segments connected to the Roundabout with the highest types
* Use the LOWER of the two for the roundabout itself.

I put in a bunch of examples and I think this rule works in every case and is much simpler than other attempts we've kicked around in the forums.

Please punch holes in my logic if I missed anything!

Three Streets and one Primary Street meet. The Roundabout should be type Street (top 2 = both Street).

The conclusion on this one seems correct, but the logic to get there seems flawed to me. I would have thought that the top 2 = Primary Street and Street.

I actually just re-worded all the examples based on other feedback, so if you want to see if I added a typo back, now is the time

This could be reworded as something much simpler to understand:
The Type should be set to the highest Type, excluding Freeway, that has two or more connections to the roundabout, with counting separated entry/exit segments as a single connection.

But the way I would read that would not be correct. Say you had a major hwy, minor hwy and two primary street connected to the roundabout. The way I read your instructions I would set the type to primary street. I would read Weeezer's instructions differently to set the type to minor hwy, which I think is the correct choice.
