Driveway Guidelines?

Postby anotherron » Tue Sep 11, 2012 10:50 pm

I live in a rural area where most homes are on dirt roads that either go directly to the home or to a number of homes. These road have no names and are not shown on county maps. Are there guidelines to help determine when to add a driveway to the map? My concerns are (1) adding too many driveways and cluttering the map, and (2) providing enough information to allow routing to homes that are far from a named road.

I too was curious so did the requisite search and came up with only this thread. Doesn't seem to be a consistent approach to how they're treated.

I delete every driveway that goes to a single house and keep all that are shared between two properties or more. I mark shared driveways private, two-way. My logic is this, WAZE is about navigation, if you can be guided to the base of a driveway for a single property, you have unambiguously reached your destination, if two or more houses share a driveway, then additional guidance may be needed to find the proper destination. Single-property driveways amount to visual clutter and false navigational complexity. Don't forget that every driveway left on the map is another intersection to be passed over, and unnecessary time to be added to the route calculation. Eliminate all spurious roads and intersections, please.

If I'm not sure if it is a shared driveway, I leave it.

I would say this is good, except for out in the countryside. In the country, you may have some long driveways (one of my friend's had a driveway that was nearly 3/4 mile long and they were the only house on it). So with the way Waze navigates, the road closest to a house might not actually be the road the driveway has access on, so having the long driveway drawn in will help get them to the right place.

If they're using an address lookup, it will very probably return a point on the named road where the driveway connects.

Bing used to have my parents house location back where the barn was, plenty far away from the road. It was one of the first locations I corrected via the GPS Map Fix site.

One thing that I've not found covered in the wiki or forums yet are private drives that are named. I'm deleting unnamed private driveways that came through with the Tiger map data, but leaving the named ones. I figure if it shows up in the county GIS, it's a real street with real house numbers, even if it's just one house. Until I can verify each one, though, they gotta stay. Some are real county-recognized streets, some are just people putting up signs that have no official meaning.

If it doesn't show up in the GIS or on commercial mapping programs, it goes away. I don't think labelling them private roads fixes anything, either. Those are for gated communities according to the wiki.

There are definitely cases where private drives, as mentioned in this thread, which serve multiple addresses. They are very common especially in rural settings.
