Just spent an hour deleting non-existing roads!

Postby richie229 » Thu Aug 30, 2012 4:09 am

Wow, are points so important that people are willing to completely screw up the maps just to add up points? Well, I guess that is a rhetorical question.... I just wish people had some ethics. There are PLENTY of points to be earned fixing issues and correcting roads that are one way, but need to be two way.

PLEASE, earn points, don't just screw the map up!

Why don't you post a link to whatever you're referring to. I doubt someone drew in non-existing roads. They were probably there from the basemap.

It's much more likely that whatever automated software Waze uses to put roads on a basemap is responsible for non-existent roads. I found Unamed roads placed on rivers and streams, probably because the software interpreted those continuous lines to be roads.

Zerox has it. I've deleted hundreds of miles of deer trails that were classified as roads in the basemap import. The only time I've seen large volumes of roads drawn in where there are no roads was with test rigs some folks here use to test mapping features and bugs.

Not to mention that drawing roads like that is time consuming and gives the fewest points of any type of editing.

I drew in some dirt roads in southwestern Mississippi last week that were poorly base-mapped...about 1/4 mile from where they were supposed to be, bad geometry, etc. The only reason I put them in was because some new editor went in and tried editing them and in the process, screwed up a bunch of other things. There was only a few GPS tracks, so I ended up deleting the base-mapped roads and drawing in new ones. An hour later when I was done, it all looked good, but I probably had only earned 50 edits. Once the roads are drawn in, you don't get additional points for fine tuning the geometry.

Thx for the heads up on the base map issue, I am sure that is most of the problem. However, I do notice that many of these roads have a username that created them and last edited them. I guess that as long as we are not trying to drive through corn fields, it is really not that big an issue. Just seemed like such a waste of time.

As far as I can tell, in the early days of Waze, whoever drove over the road first got their name assigned as the creator. Of course, if these roads don't exist, that wouldn't be the case...usually these will just had Admin as the creator. I had a large subdivision where every driveway was basemapped. Took forever to delete all of them and then get rid of all the extra junctions.

Next time you come across a group of these, link it here before you delete them. Then someone can give you a better explanation.

This has still been the case as of recent time. My father has been using Waze for a few months and his name is all over the back roads in his neck of the woods and I can guarantee you that he has not touched the editor :)

Maybe it stops happening in mature areas. I've never seen my name as creator of any road that I didn't draw myself.

If I was first to munch cookies on a basemapped road, I'd always appear as the creator. I remember doing that with interstates and other highways at the beginning.

You need to find some little streets out in the bayou that no one has touched yet to test ;)
