You just need to make sure you have Internet before clicking the close button.

I have noticed days where my points seem to have not been counted. Waze usually catches the points up over the next couple of days. I looked at my routes yesterday on the map editor and it showed a total of 165.07 miles while I only received 151 additional Waze points. I expect to see the remaining points come in today or tomorrow. I don't why the point calculations seem to be out of sync sometimes, but overall it seems to be accurate given enough time.

You do, indeed, earn points for driving, whether or not you're navigating. You're also helping your fellow Wazers by supplying traffic flow information for the route you take.

Waze has historically required an Internet connection. It's possible to cache your route if you are connected to Wi-Fi at the beginning of your journey. However, an Internet connection is required for your drive to upload. Users have had mixed results with their drives uploading at the end of a trip if they did not have a continuous Internet connection throughout the trip.
Via my iPhone 4S.

On most drives I already know where I'm going so I don't need to start navigation but I want to keep Waze on for traffic info. If I just turn Waze on but I do NOT navigate to a destination, do I still earn points during driving?

Those bonus candy points are on a different update cycle and often take a full week cycle if I recall.
