Closure of Newmarket Viaduct (Southbound) 4-5 September

Postby waynemcdougall » Wed Aug 25, 2010 8:21 am

Those of you who drive in Auckland will know that the southbound lanes of the Southern Motorway from Gillies Ave to Greenlane will be closed from 5pm on Saturday 4 September. They promise to reopen no later than 5am Monday 6 September. We shall see.

They forecast is for chaos with Aucklanders being advised not to travel. While there will be diversions http://www.facebook.com/switchmyroute surrounding roads are not expected to cope, and there will be flow on effects in surrounding areas.

I'll be using Waze to cope. Real time reports for traffic buildup and slowdowns should allow the dynamic routing to work well. The more Waze users the better, so encourage all your friends, relatives and enemies to start using it, in preparation and during this weekend. You can even sit at home, turn on Waze (or go to www.waze.com/livemap) and watch the fun and chaos.

I have emailed Waze support asking about the feasbility of blocking off this part of the highway. They have replied and are looking at the options. They don't yet support road-blocks and are suggesting they may be able to load in a massive traffic jam with 0 km/hr on that segment so Waze will route around it.

My thinking is to mark that route as a no entry road. The problem is timing. It will have to be done in advance due to the delays in Live maps getting pushed out to mobile device and the routing engine. Too late and it will be pointless. Too soon and the motorway will have a hole in it a few days early.

But hey, if people can't figure out to take the Southern motorway as usual, well then they get good training for diversions in the future. The assistance I need is where to go if I can't get through the viaduct - not the easy option.

So I'm thinking of making this change on 28 August. And then changing it back after the update including that change has flowed through. Unless Waze comes back with a better offer.

So this is a big deal. I'd value your comments. Maybe I should go for the 27th? It'll be fun to see where Waze tells me to go when there's no motorway there.

I have not tried this myself, but couldn't you put either:

a) Mark the sections of road as 'no entry', which is a street type I believe.
b) Put turn restrictions on every turn into that section of road.

As I say, I have not tried either of those myself.

Actually, it was setting the direction to No Entry, not setting the street type.

Yes Stuart you can do that. But the point is how to make it come into effect at exactly the right time, so Waze isn't telling people the motorway is closed for 2 weeks when it isn't, but making sure it does tell people it is closed when it is. We're not at real-time updates from the Live map to the mobile devices and their routing. It's more like a week lag, and it's variable.

Yes, you are right. Sorry, that will teach me to only skim read postings before replying.

Waze really needs road work/road closure information. There's a ton of road works around Auckland and roads being closed, but no way to route around them without knowing ahead of time.

1. Roadblocks is being worked on by Waze and is very high priority. Not ready yet.

2. Getting road closure information into Waze isn't their problem as such, but is something I'm thinking about.

3. Heaps of road closures in Auckland? Really? Such as? If there are such closures there will be detours, and once you go off route Waze will try and reroute you.

4. And on topic for this thread, the Newmarket Viaduct and surrounding areas are all connected again. And I've added the Khyber Pass on- and off-ramps, the St Marks on-ramps, and Grafton road on-ramps to SH1 and SH16 - all of which were missing. In facte the whole on- off-ramp area around Grafton Road/The Strand was a mess. I think I have fixed it. I also found the Greenlane off-ramp (Northbound) wasn't connected to the motorway. Oops. So those on- and off-ramps I mentioned are all fixed, but I have not done a comprehensive audit of off and on ramps. I don't use them enough. I guess other Waze users don't either, which is why these haven't been picked up earlier.

Good job wayne! You're kicking ass on points too.

http://maps.aa.co.nz/traffic/roadwatch is a good resource for roadworks, but not so good for accidents. I have found a way to extract the information from the AA site and post to twitter, but delayed it because Waze have told me that twitter and traffic reports don't affect routing (which seems like a waste of time).

My points will subside once maps are all finalized. I don't travel much. But I'm proud of work done in Hamilton and Auckland and Palmerston north. And Wellington.

Even if twitter reports don't affect routing, and I can understand why not to use them, still useful to get notice of them. I've looked St AA roadwatch and couldn't figure out how to extract the data. Please implement and/or share the code. Kudos to you. This has been one of my thoughts. Even if we don't yet have roadblocks at least a notification would be useful.
