Gauteng mapping resources

General
Google street view can occasionally settle disputes about how roads are named (Copying google maps to Waze is probably illegal)
http://gis.deat.gov.za/Default.asp have some GIS data

Provincial goverment site offline currently...
Freeways
SANRAL / i-traffic - have a limited amount of info
Engineering news - have strories about GFIP milestones, often with images of interchanges

By metro municipality
All seem to have a publically accessible GIS. Most have seperate maps that might be easier to work with in some cases
Tshwane
Maps site: (To be considered authoritive on suburb names/borders / street names)
http://www.tshwane.gov.za/streetmaps.cfm
The street guide work well once you figured out how to zoom in (read the instructions page)
GIS seem out of date in many cases
Johannesburg

Ekurhuleni

Technically, it's illegal to use any resource other than what is supplied by waze. If the data that is entered is derived from somewhere else, it *has* to be attributed, and may be copyright infringement. (Yeh, even if Garmin and TomTom have the exact same maps, they own the copyright on those maps).

That being said and completely hypocritically, I also do some work on http://www.openstreetmap.org/. It is a valuable resource too. There are some suburbs that not even google maps has.

Street names as viewed from photos on street view cannot be copyrighted. (Copying the photo is not allowed though..) (As I understand it: Facts are not subject to copyright - a specific expression of the facts are) (Other interesting questions is whether filling the suburb on streets can be seen as copying the border around those streets in another map)

(Attribution requirements are for some specific cases - see act)

Copying Openstreetmap data won't be allowed either, as Waze's maps are under an incompatible license.

(Maps are classified as drawings in terms of ZA copyright legislation, which as protected as "artistic works" - The act is here: http://www.gpa.co.za/pdf/legislation/Co ... %20Act.pdf - whether this is the relevant act is another question)
