Spec sheet for a LRB: maximuim distance for the standard 2,000 ft, LR model - 3,280 ft.

Unless your state mandates a maximum distance, they will go by the manufacturer's ratings.

Robot Traffipatrol XR lidar gun: max distance 1,500m or 4,500ft

For Europe use alerts of up to 2,000m are mandatory.

The laser beam divergence is 2mrad, which means 20cm measuring spot for 100m distance from the gun. At 1,500m the aim spot is about 3m or ~10ft and covers the whole front of a vehicle. So the shooter doesn't have to aim for the license plate. It's common practice to use tripod mount for these distances in order to achieve easier and steadier aim.

I was reading a lot of these comments and there are 2 issues that I see with the police and opposite directions. In Georgia, along I-75, there are breaks in the guardrail that separates the north and south bound lanes. If a user reports seeing a police officer (facing south) on the south bound side of the interstate, I'd be willing to bet my car and all of my worldly possessions he's clocking traffic on the north bound side of the Interstate. When he catches someone, if he's already at the break he just has to whip the car around and pull over the unsuspecting motorist. If it's a Wazer, who gets pulled over, he/she will never get the "police ahead" report, because the police officer is on the opposite side of the Interstate, thus "not a worry" for the north bound Wazer.

Also, in San Antonio, they have this machine that sits on a tripod. The police will go onto an overpass and place the machine on the overpass. They then look and "aim" the machine at any car which gets their speed. They then use the radio to call the marked police unit 1/2 a mile down the road to pull over "black car," "red truck," etc. A distance of 2000ft, or 500ft won't help any Wazer, because the average human is looking for an actual police vehicle, so the group of police vehicles will get reported, but the cop on the overpass will NEVER get reported. We also don't have that option to put a cop onto an overpass.
Just wazeting my time to help you waze your route smoothly.

To the poster above, I would still post police presence to notify what you saw. Perhaps you can type a description, so the next driver doesn't clear it out.

My radar detector alerts me to radar and laser at different distances based on my speed. If I'm traveling under 15mph it will even auto-mute and only blink (since chances are I'm not speeding at 15). Maybe Waze could adapt its alert distance based on current speed as well?

It was suggested above that it be based upon faster or slower roads, but if I'm on a highway in a traffic jam traveling at 10mph I probably don't need a police alert at 2000 feet.

This makes perfect sense now that I think about it but it isn't clear in the interface that this is discouraged. I reported one just this morning while attempting to be helpful.

Where do cops that have somebody pulled over fall into the reporting hierarchy?

Beltronics GX-65. It has built in GPS so it can alert to speed cameras and takes my speed into account for all alerts. It allows you to ignore a certain radar source in a specific place too just by pressing mute 3x. It will store the radar frequency and location and only spin an icon in the corner (to let you know there's an ignored source in the area) instead of a regular alert.
