Simply can't use Waze no matter how much i want

Postby highlightshadow » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:45 pm

Today was really the final straw with Waze

It tried to route me twice on 2 completely (and i really mean that) absurd routes that were so wrong on 2 major counts:
1. over 25-30miles longer than a reasonable TomTom derived route based on time-of-day and prevailing traffic conditions (horrendous)
2. Taking me miles completely in the wrong direction before coming back
3. Insisting i keep taking these ridiculous routes to the point where even when i'm 10 miles away from the motorway (highway) and going down a quieter main road heading directly in the right direction on major roads, it was still trying to route me back onto the motorway, then ending with leaving highway 3 junctions beyond the one any sane person would leave at and adding the extra 20-30 miles onto the journey despite the fact that the motorway traffic speed was <30mph

To illustrate, this is the route i took:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=De ... 2&t=m&z=10

This is roughly the route it wanted to take me:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=De ... 3&t=m&z=10

I see a reasonable number of Wazers in the area and the roads are all long established so i have no idea why it couldn't make the sensible decisions both TomTom and Navigon routinely do.

Sorry but Waze is getting deleted. :(

Why write such a long post if you're set on deleting it!?

Have you considered trying to find and fix the problems? That's the coolest feature of Waze, the fact that you the user, you who knows your local roads far better than any employee of a company located who knows where could ever know them, You can go in and edit the roads.

Most often when there is a serious routing problem like you've indicated it's due to a problem in the map layout, Waze simply doesn't know it can go the way you want to go. But if you are willing to spend the time, you can make it work for you and for others.

Based on just the Google maps you shared, I'm guessing the primary problem is that Waze is having a problem with the A57 probably somewhere near where your route connects from the M1 to the A57 at Aston. Thus Waze want to keep you on the M1 resulting in the much longer route. (Note I'm in the US so sorry if I'm not referring to the roads or connections correctly.) I'd also guess there are more problems around Nottingham resulting in it trying to take you clear out and around the city rather than one of the shorter connecting routes visible on the googlemaps.

I guarantee there are editors (Other users who enjoy taking the time to fix the maps) who will be happy to find and fix the problem. One thing you can do is drive YOUR route, and note the point where Waze stops trying to send you other ways and gives you the correct routing. Somewhere near that point is the trouble spot (It is possible for there to be multiple spots, but more often than not it's one troublesome intersection that just needs a little TLC to fix.

Even if you still plan on deleting it, I'd ask you to drive your route at least once more, try to note the trouble location so that we can get it fixed for other drivers. One other thing to check is to go into the Settings in Waze and under Navigation make sure you have fastest route, rather than shortest. There are problems with the shortest option, often resulting in a very non shortest route.

Sometimes, Waze just needs collect speed data from all the right roads to learn the best routes.

Stick with it, and it will get better for you. :)

I think a lot of the frustrated people are wanting an instant gratification solution even if it costs more. Sure waze isn't perfect but I love the fact that I can directly fix map/navigation issues. I had my share of negative experiences with garmins in the past and that was after paying 400 for the unit (it was a while ago :-)).

There was one exit that tried routing me the wrong way on a one way and if I turned the other way it would loop me back to the same intersection.

The thing with tomtoms and garmins is that they will get worse with time (unless you spend more money on maps or new units). Waze should only get better at little to no cost for the average user.

All the roads on my route were primary main roads (no reason for them not to be extensively mapped) ... but the fundamental thing was it was routing massively longer routes than it should ... i'd love to find a reasonable 'fix' as i like the idea of the whole program and contributing (which i have done for a while and edited a few roads in the past)

if it was just taking me a slightly unusual route thats one thing but to be adding 30% on the total length is another and not just a small 'glitch' ... it could have chosen at least 5 alternatives that i can think of off the top of my head that would have been quicker / shorter than its doing.

I dunno ... i'd love to know how to resolve the situation so i could carry on using it

Have you checked the turn restrictions for the roads in the area? I have found a lot of areas that have a ton of red arrows for no reason. Ctrl + A should highlight them (not sure if you were aware of the keyboard shortcuts).

It could also have to due with waze not prioritizing the roads properly.

Looking at those routes on Google, it could be a problem with the M1 Worksop exit. Have you checked that, as that's where the routes diverge?

That junction is uneditable (at least for me) all the other bits are find but the actual slip road is locked so whether there is an issue i can't seem to fix or check it... does look like it has a turn off ok onto the roundabout

Still kinda curious as to why it didn't at least route me off at jct 26 being the most logical choice or 25 being further but still sensible instead of all the way to 24

I would like to fix issues and use the app long term if i can

We'd like that too! ;-) Hopefully one of us can do a decent diagnosis on the route. We can normally find some faulty restriction somewhere!

I'm on my hols at the moment but don't doubt one of the other veterans will do his duty! ;-)
