When is Waze "active?"

When is Waze "active?"

Postby TLaff2 » Tue Jul 03, 2012 6:08 am

So, during a long drive (3-4 hours), I open Waze, not using it to navigate, but rather just follow along as I drive..... and sometimes open other apps, answer a phone call, go to the texting app, etc. Is Waze still running in the background and am I getting credit for those miles? Or does the app need to be open and on the screen for that? If it runs in the background, how long will it do that for? Pretty tough to keep the app running continuously for four hours in the foreground, but it appears to be running in the background at times. Any thoughts here would be appreciated.

As long as you have it on, you are getting credit for driving, regardless if its in the background or not. Doesn't even matter if you are using navigation or not.

I sometimes find that Waze stops after a period of time in the background (I use iPhone). Not sure how long but I have noticed it on a journey as short as 40 minutes. If I look at my saved routes afterwards I can see the route stop suddenly.

If I regularly go back into the Waze app after doing other things it stays active the whole journey.

I checked a trip I took recently in map editor, as I'm only allowed to edit 1m around journeys I've taken I think it's a good way to easily check what has been credited :geek:

The trip is only partially there, quite a few missing stretches of motorway not recognised as a trip.

I guess I wasn't credited for those :(

I may have switched to my speed camera warning app or maybe just lost internet connection briefly

I noticed this on my android couple days ago:
I was navigating to a friend's house. I switch the screen to Pandora for a couple minutes to choose a station. The Waze logo is definitely displaying in the Status Bar, so it's running.
I drop down the status bar and switch to Waze to I get the Waze startup screen. It come up to show the map and asks if I want to resume my navigation. I hit yes.
Then I go back to Pandora again, 2 minutes later back to Waze, same problem. It doesn't stay running as I expected.

When running in the background Waze will quit when no movement is detected for some time (<10min?). On iOS it can also happen if other apps (in the foreground) demand large amounts of memory - such is the nature of iOS.

Android is similar. I've never had it last more than a few minutes in the background. YMMV

Hmm, that could be it, because in my example above I was fiddling with Pandora at traffic lights and then I'd see that it wasn't "active", but when I do it while moving, say on interstate, then it seems to stay up in the background longer, but probably never more than 10 minutes I don't think.

Some times I can get waze running in the background. Other times I still have the icon in the taskbar, but when I try to return to waze I get the start screen and the "Ooops" popup asking me to send in logs.

Only needs to be open. I've seen some people say that after a while it shuts down in the background. But just back in the foreground after using other functions. No problems ...
