iOS6 will be available for iPhone 3GS+, so that's every phone since 2009.
How's Samsung keeping up with updates nowadays?

As Samsung and Apple combined employ more lawyers than developers it is a miracle that there still are updates getting produced at all.

You don't like FREE updates and enhancements to the operating system? I do!
Well i do but from other sources. And i like to be root on every system, and apples philosophy is to avoid such things, thats what i don't really like on iOS. And it depends on what a user need from these os's.

Requires rooting etc, not sure about it on a phone that's not technically mine.

I disagree, Waze is great if you don't want to be in traffic and choose a better route.

It probably won't be a replacement. Android phone already come with Google Maps and Navigation, but these work very differently from Waze.
Is iPhone's version also going to be "social"?

It ain't over till the fat lady sings etc. As it looks Applegate bought Waze an extra year, maybe two, and gave it a fantastic growth. But nothing final (yet).
