Stop providing points for reporting

Postby johro » Sun Aug 12, 2012 8:11 pm

I have seen wazers who report just to get points. Like reporting a traffic jam 10 times in the middle of the night. This abuse is very annoying and damages the whole idea of Waze. So I suggest that you stop providing points for reports.

They did this once and removed all points for chit-chats. I suspect that it would be a good idea to remove, or at least significantly reduce, the points given for reporting. However, this is a social app/nav app with a gaming aspects (points). If we start removing points for 'this,' then why not also for 'that' and 'the other'?

Yes but even though you have 1 000 000 points no one knows whether you have got those points by being active or walking around the neighnorhood reporting 100 events each day. This way no one will care about your points because they do not know how you got them!

It is better to only provide points to actions which not can be easily abused. Otherwise the trust of waze will be damaged and the navigator will suggest new roads which in fact is even slower.

According to waze.wiki you get points from 10 different actions. Lets remove road reporting and report comments and we still have 8 actions left.

There are limits to the amount of reports one can make in a certain period of time...

Really? But there are still a possibility for abusers to make a significant amount of reports in a short time. I have seen it myself and it may result in other wazers taking another road.

An alternative to remove the points from reporting is to make it possible to report an "abuser"

At the point that they stop seeing that they're getting points and they continue to do it, they're just being...hmm...not supposed to use that word in the forums...use your imagination.

There is a means to report abuse, but all it does is hides that user from you. I don't know if it works on reports, or just chit-chats. Most people who do this sort of thing will get tired of it quickly and move on to Angry Birds or something like that. The worst thing you can do is respond. It's one of those Please Don't Feed the Troll sort of things.

I think we do need a reward system, it's a motivational tool to make this whole waze experience better for each other. But yes, there should be a way to get rid of abusers. Perfhaps banning the ones who have a high number of negative confirmations (hitting the "not there" button) from reporting for a few days at a time?

Yes something like a banning system would be nice. There is one guy who makes several reports each day, often from the same two addresses. So basically I now know where he lives and where he works (judging from the time of the reports).

Stop providing points for reporting

Problem is banning someone also removes the useful information (avg speed, road verification) that the user also provides. In fact any negative consequence runs that risk. It's better to simply remove incentive for the offending behavior (no points for multiple reports of same type on same road within x distance of one another) and let the problem self correct.
