Good call. I was about to post that, too.

There is a workaround other than turning off Waze, and that is to turn off the GPS receiver until you need to be moving again.

Turning the GPS off is not an option because when I'm waiting for jobs I like to play on Facebook and so on.

After reading all the replies I think the best options are either live with it or stop the application when I am waiting for a job.

Please go with stop the application. Living with it is just going to piss off other users who get put on detours to avoid the "traffic" you are creating.

I would like to suggest another option to be added to Waze.
Another button, marked pause/restart (or similar). Its only function: to stop auto traffic updates. If easy to get to, preferably on screen all the time, would greatly reduce false updates while stopping for coffee etc.
The user should still be able to see reports and be able to plan any necessary route changes before they rejoin the traffic flow.
I suspect the present method of having to shut down the application and then restarting and reprogramming destination means many do not turn of Waze and hence generate false traffic movement reports.
Just my two cents worth.

If your lucky like me, if I accidently leave Waze in the background for more than a few minutes, it crashes, which means everyone's happy.

But I'm guessing your not as lucky as me. Just switch it off. One of the most annoying things I run into is fake traffic.

Waze stated in the Palo Alto meetup that they will not be adding any button to 'pause' data going to their servers.

There is no need to reprogram a destination if you are on a route when you shut Waze off. Waze will prompt you when you restart the application if you want to continue on the route that was set prior to Waze being shut down. It is very simple to shut Waze down when you stop. Same effort as putting your vehicle in Park and setting the parking brake.

@gettingthere.
OK. Sorry for mentioning this.
Perhaps that function is on the newer versions. Unfortunately I am stuck on Android V1.5 (Motorola Dext) and I can't install anything newer than V2.4.0.26
I have not seen a message suggesting to continue a route. Its the same with the program 'learning' routes taken. After anywhere from 50 to a hundred times driving particular routes, it still insists on advising taking routes that I never, or very occasionally, follow.
A number of the functions I have only found out about by reading this forum. I wonder, is there a list that specifies what can be done in which phone/software combinations?.
But, come to think of it, a second taken to pause/restart compared to a minute or so to stop/restart still seems a better idea.

I sugest the PARKING option for the feeling and acuracy reason...
What if.... I need to stop to take a look at the traffic or to take a phone call or to reach under the seat for the phone... and after recovering it put it in PARKING.

When you come to a stop, a small icon should appear that allows you to suspend traffic reporting. When the vehicle starts moving again above a certain threshold (say 50 km/h, or the average speed of the adjacent segment), traffic will begin reporting again.
