Can Waze add to Show Current Speed Limit?

This feature has a lot of mistakes in other apps too. I am not against new features, but 1) I should be able to opt out, so I don't see all this nonsensical guesses and senseless warning 2) there should be some other way to report mistakes, because otherwise I will have to resign as AM.

I do not feel a need to speed limts to be inside application. As a responsible driver, look around and observe, if nothing else, what are the other reasonable drivers doing. Showing speed limits does not add enough value to this application, in my opinion.

My mother is the most responsible driver I know of, and even she's been caught by a speed camera. We're human, we're not perfect, we're often absent minded. It helps.

I can imagine the following userinterface: right on top of your speedometer-display on the Wazescreen a trafficsign could display the current set legal maximum speed. As soon as you drive faster, the sign flashes and an audible warning sounds. If you drive a street that has no speed set the trafficsign is greyed, dull. To set the speed in a street you merely SWIPE the trafficsign from right to left - the current speed is then recorded (maybe rounded to the next 5 km or miles?) as being the legal max. The next Wazer to drive it sees the display and hears the sound if he is too fast.

All this would NOT require an interface in WME. Would not have an option to report it as wrong (instead, you can just set it again while you drive). The display and the warning could be hidden per setupmenu.


Here are the caveats: the current speed displayed in the speedometer at the right is NOT the actual speed. (see this thread). I can see this bug alone produce a lot of complaints - and again if it ever gets fixed and many of the recorded speeds turn out a bit too high.
Another one is that it may be too easy for some to collect points - we see speed-camvandals right now and we will see speed-vandals then.

That part's easy to prevent ... just don't give points for reporting speed limits.

I think WAZE has to add this. There is a database with the speed limits. I drove Europe with a GPS dedicated tool (iGO) and it was great to have the speed warnings. It would be of course user selectable, and preferably, a user can say at what level ABOVE the speed level it will be notified.
I also would accept a warning each time I turn "Speed warning" ON, that say: "Waze can not guarantee the speed warning to be accurate, please look at street signs". That is fine for me. Even if I need to press APPROVE once a day (or when start driving).
Alternatively, play a tone every time I pass a user defined speed, and light a "red square" (or whatever) on screen. I had this in my former MAZDA and it worked fine (warning at 110 KPH). Or even two speeds, 60 KPH ("pink square") and 110 KPH ("purple square").

What about a speed limit change in the middle of the road?

I think speed limits are a worthwhile thing to add. I would think we'd want Waze to provide accurate ETAs, wouldn't we? What happens if the speed limit on a road is incorrect? We have no way to see what Waze thinks it is and no way to correct it the way it is right now. You can base routing on average speeds over a time period, but there are many roads with no average speeds because they are in rural areas or other areas without wazers driving over them. As far as being able to look out the window, that works well most of the time. However, I've often come across situations where I'm driving somewhere unfamiliar and turn onto a road from a cross street and there isn't a speed limit sign for miles. I can guess the speed limit, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be correct.

If it's set up so that it is easy to edit speed limits without those being done through the editor, then I think it's a good idea. I don't agree with the suggestion to set the speed limit to your current speed as that is most likely to be wrong. Just allow a quick way to set it (+/- by 5 mph or km/h at a time would allow quickly setting the speed limit). There does need to be a way to be able to set a long range rather than each road segment, though. If the road is the same speed limit for 50 miles, you don't want to have to set it on every segment one at a time. Thinking about that, maybe it would be best as a WME option. I don't really know the best way to do it, but I think it's useful.

And I see some comments about speed limits changing often. There may be some places where this is true, but I cannot think of more than a handful of speed limit changes in any state I've lived in the entire time I've been driving (that's a lot of area and time). The speed limits I see today are the same as they were when I started driving. They should only change when roads change or when it is determined that some section of road is dangerous at the current speed limit.

Where I live speedlimits are an instrument for politicians. And hey, we have dynamic speedlimits on freeways. The solution is to use that windshield in front of you - for looking at signage.

I suggest to let the matter rest until 90% of the current implemented features work at least most of the time - and even then to come with a solution that does not burden the editors.

Speed limits would only valuable for routing in waze before a road has been driven on a few times. After that waze will have collected real data about how fast traffic moves on that road and be able to give more accurate ETA's.

I started out against the idea of putting in speed limits but I am beginning to come around. Most of the reason my mind is changing is the talk of adding vehicle types. My thinking is when that happens there will be major changes to the database anyway; speed limits, additional road types, maybe even paving types can be added at that time.
