How much data does Waze use? ...

Post by cmeisenzahl
I realize that's a generic/vague question. ;-)

But I mean relative to other apps. My wife normally uses very little data on her iPhone 4. But lately she has been using several hundred MBs at a time and I can't quite figure out why.

She doesn't do much streaming whatsoever. But she has begun using the Waze navigation app which she loves.

Any idea how much data the app pushes per minute/hour/whatever?

Thanks very much in advance,
Chris

On Android ICS, the OS shows how much data each app uses during a given period.

I use it about 200 miles a week, and since June 2, Waze used 11.5MB

On average most users on these forums have said they use no more than 200MB per month.

I'm on an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile UK as I consider myself a heavy user. Waze follows me in my Taxi 4-5 nights a week and I've used 59.84MB in 9 days averaging 6 hours a night. So that's around 220MB per month for me.

For those who have Android ICS 4.x.x, you can see your data usage in "Settings > Data Usage" then select "Waze" and adjust the "Data usage cycle" date to see the data usage for a particular day/days/week/month.

If your worried about data usage on an ICS device you can enable the "Restrict background data option" under the Waze or any other App "Data usage" settings, and set a data limit.
For older versions of Android or iPhone devices you'll have to find an App.

I wanna know how the hell Waze has used 2-3GB like the poster above. I'd be looking into my background data settings because it sure as hell isn't Waze using that.

The data used is also even lower if you cache the route by routing on wifi at home. Waze will grab all the TTS stuff over wiki for the route, unless there's routing changes on the move of course.

...and if you enable datacompression. Using the 3d-view can also use substantially more data than 2d-view because 3d shows more tiles (up to the horizon)

I do this and as a rule of thumb I seem to average about 50KB per mile.
