Anyone know how the "report abuse" option works?

Postby unwallflower » Mon Apr 11, 2011 4:19 pm

I've only used it two or three times, always to report users who respond "thx" to every report in the San Diego area.

Each of these times I've used it, it tells me that if enough people report abuse the user will be disabled from reporting or something like that. Except every time... that user's reports/comments disappear instantly. As soon as I've reported them, I'm no longer able to see their reports.

That leads me to believe that this "report abuse" option is really more like a "hide" or "ignore" option. Anyone have any idea?

Pretty sure your suspicion is valid. I reported a user over here and now never see any of his reports... unless that is I look on Live Map where they are there for the world to admire. I have my doubts that it's anything other than than hide, ie not abuse report is actually made!

I wonder how many "enough" is? Maybe we should all get together and report the same person until they are disabled from reporting. Any volunteers? ;)

What I suspect is that it doesn't even work like this, unfortunately. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but I don't think there is an "enough" threshold... I suspect that this feature never actually disables someone from reporting.

I guess it's not a huge deal, but I see a big difference between "report this user and disable them from abusing the report function" and "hide this user from your personal view because they are annoying".

I think the same way as you, but I'd also like to test it!

hi guys,

when reporting abuse on a different user, it means that you are 'black listing' him. I.e. you will no longer see any reports or comments from him, even if they are on a thread you opened, or if they are commenting on an event that you have also commented on.

This interaction only affects two user - the reporter and 'abuser'. However, we also count how many different users report abuse on a specific user. When this number rises, we do a quick check and if needed block this user from reporting all together.

If there are any users which need our attention, you are welcome to write to us on alpha@waze.com

thanks

Thanks for the explanation, Dror. It's good to know that you guys are keeping tabs on this stuff, I was a little worried that these users were falling through the cracks.

I wish that there were two separate options: one to blacklist, and one to report. Like a lot of forums have the option to "ignore" a user (if you put them on your ignore list, you can't see any of their posts), AND an option to "report" an offensive post in order to bring it to moderator attention.

Yes, the "mute" funcion is a good idea :)

I can see a problem with the way this is handled. I have previously reported 2 users, so I can no longer see their reports or comments. As it was a while ago, it's possible their behaviour has changed and they don't abuse the ping function anymore, but because I have blocked them I miss their comments on conversations they're having with others, and also any important event updates they might post.

Surely the report abuse function should only be to make aware that the person is abusing. Maybe issue a short ban on pings (couple of days?) and ask them to stop abusing. Had I known it would block them forever I would not have used it.

I agree 100%. If nothing else, they should at least rename it from "report abuse" to "hide" or "ignore". The name "report abuse" is awfully misleading in my opinion.
