Downloaded Waze 3.5.3 to a Nexus 7 (ICS) HTC REZOUND (ICS) and Droid Incredible. When I open the navigation search screen and key in anything nothing happens. If I look at the categories I can see the categories near me.
What am I doing wrong?

Are you tapping the search button to execute the search? On some phones, this is a hardware key.

I am using the 2.4.0.26 open version and have lost searching as well. Worked well about 2 weeks ago. Nothing is returned from searches (blank screen). This is true whether Search button is pressed or hardware keyboard Enter is pressed.
