UK City Renaming Requests

Postby Timbones » Tue Aug 14, 2012 10:12 pm

If you spot a large town that needs to be renamed, post a request here and we'll pass it on to Support.
Smaller towns can might get bulk edited by an experienced editor.

Tip: You can use http://gazetteer.co.uk/ to find towns and duplicates

As a guideline, if the entire town fits within the screen at zoom level 3, then it can be renamed by ourselves. Any town larger than this is best done by support.

I'm expecting this process to be a slow, background task that we do while working on the daily task of fixing road names and routes. Some cities are in a worse state than others, and will want addressing first (ha ha). The list we give to support is only processed once a month, and the city polygons in the editor less often.

Consider this to be a temporary trial, which we'll keep going for as long as it seems manageable.

This is going to be a big thread.

Can I start it by asking for Blackpool to be cleaned up? As there is a small hamlet in Devon with the name Blackpool, I'll leave it up to the CM's to decide if a county suffix is needed.

While I'm here moaning, a lot of Lancashire is like this. It's a hodge-podge of double names and county suffixes. The whole county could do with a clean up.

Big towns around my way: Dorking and Guildford would both be better without the Surrey suffix.

I would say so. My most "local" area is Bellingham. This has it listed correctly as part of LB Lewisham but incorrectly in Kent.

The other source I listed somewhere (download from OS) has Bellingham in Lewisham:

I'd like to suggest changing "Crawley (W Sussex)" to plain "Crawley".

While there are other "Crawley"s in the UK, the others are much smaller. I don't think they are named on Waze at the moment, but they could be named as "Crawley (Hampshire)" or whatever if required.

Here are some tips when checking for duplicate names:

1. go to UK Gazetteer and search for a town or village
2. if there are multiple results, copy a 'grid ref' for a place you don't know
3. go to OS Map Viewer and paste grid ref in search box.
4. profit!

PS: Of course, you can just search for places in the OS Map...

and for population estimates the Census (2001 only so far) table KS01 might help:

There are similar look-up sources.

the village in question Rogate is actually in West Sussex not Hampshire. Can someone get it changed or removed.

Thanks

Here's an odd problem.

I have started to rename cities in my areas and have been using the WME Ext tools to do this. I hadn't had an issue so far until I noticed that when I try and change "Altrincham (Cheshire)" to just plain "Altrincham" for some reason it changes it after saving to "Hale (Cheshire)". I hadn't noticed it do this until I had done the entire town! I don't think it has anything to do with the tools as the same happens when using WME and doing a single road.

Have a try yourself if you have editing rights: https://world.waze.com/editor/?lon=-2.3 ... TTTTTTTTFT

I am curious to find out if anyone has seen it before and if it is only happening to me.
