[SUPPORT] Traffic Avoidance Failure

Postby tgoth » Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:17 am

I was doing some editing at home and noticed a local freeway backed up because of an accident in the live map. I knew I would be leaving soon, and using that freeway to get to work. I figured it would be a good test of how I would be routed around the traffic. Sadly, Waze failed me. Terribly.

I hopped in the car, told Waze where to go, and it routed me directly through the bumper to bumper traffic.

I couldn't believe it, so I tried alternate routes. Nothing.

I turned on avoid highways and it gave the route it should of given to avoid traffic.

Turned off avoid highways, it still routes through the (now worse) traffic

I have a couple more screenshots of my route through traffic, but 3 is the limit per post.

I don't know why this happened, if it routes fine with avoid highways turned off it should know to avoid a traffic jammed freeway. Here's the permalink, but that won't help with traffic avoidance

This is making me think twice about contributing any further time to editing. This time I knew an alternate route to avoid the traffic jam, but how can I ever trust Waze in an unfamiliar area? Or recommend it to friends?

The purpose of Waze is to help me avoid traffic like this, and it failed me.
Regards,
Tyler

Trafic Avoidance Failure

Maybe I just don't understand but isn't the ETA in the screen shots the same for both routes?

Indeed. The aim of the app is to avoid traffic that would extend your eta! I could easily avoid traffic all the way to work but it would take hours!

You'll also use less gas sitting in traffic version meandering through streets if the ETAs are the same!

Whatever was change in the backend had really destroy Waze ability to navigate around traffic. For the pass 3 months, I did not even get a reroute on build up traffic ahead. Seem like the setting had been relax to much and starting to behave like other navigation software. It should go back to the default setting.

However, Waze had definitely improve on its routing direction to location. I have been a member since Waze first came out. I do see what had been change but not as active on the forum.

I got a pop-up today on my commute 'Waze has rerouted you - time savings 3 minutes'. So it seems to be working, at least on the US/Canada server.

Waze is not going to route you around all traffic. It takes traffic into account and sends you via the best option at the time. If the traffic changes when you are on-route and the ETA becomes more than 3-5 minutes longer than a valid alternative route, it should re-route you.

There may be other setting that affect how this works. Avoid Highways, Minimize Turns, and Goodie/Cookie munching.

Although we did hear at the Waze Palo Alto Meet Up that it doesn't matter how you set Minimize Turns and that option is always 'ON' in regards to routing. I don't recall if they said that they were planning to remove this option.

Waze did agree to remove the Goodie/Cookie munching option since that option is causing problem with routes and causing Wazers to submit Update Requests for bad routing that is the fault of this option being on. No ETA on when this option will be removed.

I'm not convinced all is fine on the NA routing server. I got a pop-up today saying there was a faster route, but my route didn't actually change.
Prior to about the time I started using the Android 2.9 betas (not implying a connection, just establishing a time) my commuting routes would vary daily. Since about the time I've been using the Android 2.9 betas, my communting routes have been almost static. From where I sit it looks like something was changed and not for the better.

If you think there is something wrong with traffic re-routing in the Android Beta, be sure to post any relevant info in the Android Beta thread.

The second is after I checked alternate routes and found none, I requested the route again, this time, with more of a traffic jam showing.

The routes (blocked freeway vs. through town) are comparable. Freeway is 6.2 miles (but faster), town is 5.3 miles (slower, but only by a couple minutes).

As I drove over the freeway, it was at a standstill, as the reports and and road speed in Waze has said.

I think that deeper issues lie within the routing server. I can only think of one occurrence, ever, where Waze has routed me around traffic it knew about, and that only happend when requesting a route. It has never rerouted me while driving

We are having the same problem on the World server, with 8-page thread in Czech & Slovak forum. A few months ago I've recorded a video demonstration of this bug: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-AFBAJ7rKc

Actually the problem occurs in about 90% of all routing requests. Sometimes (very rarely) it works correctly.

support please respond Int. routing servers - possible bug
