I would like to know if waze can fix this issue.
When I select it to guide me to a location, the purple color it lays down on the route blocks my ability to see the color of the traffic. Thus I may be heading into a heavy traffic problem and not detect this.

Waze shouldn't be routing you into a heavy traffic problem if a reasonable alternate route exists. That's Waze's primary function.
Unless you're in a place without a lot of other Wazers, or with immature maps, you should try to trust the Waze routing.

If there is heavy traffic, you should be able to see yellow or red just outside of the purple. I agree it could be better. Also, there will be a speed marker at the beginning (end? I can't remember) of the section of slowed down traffic. That is a pretty clear sign.
