Color schemes thread

I've been playing with some colour schemes today for the first time in over a year now that I've worked out how to upload them onto an un-jailbroken iOS6 iPhone ...

After poking around I have a question:

Most colours are RGB hex like this:

However a small number have 8 digits:

What do the extra two digits do (transparency?) and is the RGB the first or last 6?

IIRC, the last 2 digits of the 8-digit one are always zero. Not sure what the difference is...

I asked this a long time ago and got a not-very definitive answer. I'll go look to see if I have it anywhere, but I rather doubt it.

EDIT: Here is the answer I was given by Dror. I don't think he asked anyone, so this could be completely wrong:

As far as I know, adding the "00" at the end of the color code, deactivate the parameter. For example, cities and airports defined under "Stations", therefore there is no use of the specific color for each - they get the same gray as "stations".

If did find some notes by shalafi from a post in May 2010 in a text file I had:

some properties also have an alpha value specified (Cities #xxxxxx00, changing the alpha to #xxxxxxff will show the City area)

So, one could deduce that 00=off and ff=on ...

However in the new day colour scheme for the v3.5 beta we have the following value:

And Map editors had:

Does the Labels.BgColor get used in the v3.x client?

The last two digits are definitely some kind of opacity / alpha controls.

Labels.BgColor is used - it's the font outline for Road names, City names, etc.

You can try changing the Labels.BgColor from FF0000FF to FF000000 in a few steps and observe the red outlines fade away in the client.

OK, I must be missing something pretty big.

I just copied in AlanOfTheBerg's scheme that was posted back on pg 3. I carefully cut'n'pasted just the color definition lines, and carefully matched up parameter names so I could ensure that I was getting them in the right places, but my screen looks nothing like his.

Note, something odd is happening to the colors when they're posted here - they don't look anywhere near so sickly green either on my device or when I look at them from the PC. It even looks ugly when I uploaded it to Photobucket. Not sure what's going on. Net result, I'm not getting blue interstates, etc as AOTB showed in his pics.

Now, I did leave the *.DeltaX: values and *.Thickness: values alone. I wanted to see how the colors looked with the current road widths before I made them narrower, but the colors don't seem to be showing up as changed.

Also, I noticed the *.Declutter: values. Interstates are set to a huge number which seems to indicate that they'll never go away. If I play with the numbers for streets, will they stick around at higher speeds? Where I live, we have a lot of county roads that really shouldn't be anything more than "street", yet the speed limits are 45-55MPH, and are commonly traveled faster than that. Of course, they disappear at those speeds. I'd like to make 'em come back again!

depends on what your display type is - tft, slcd, amoled, samoled .. the color presentation can vary wildly between the display types and even between different displays of the same type.

IIRC, Declutter affects the number of roadnames visible on the screen. It does nothing about the amount of segments that are shown at different zoom levels.
