Points Driving Unmapped Roads

Are miles/km driven on unmapped roadways (where you are not creating a new road), such as the parking lot of a business, count towards your distance driven, or is it strictly on the mapped roads?

The roads must either exist on the map or you must be in the process of actively paving them for the distance to count.
