Dirt Roads

@iSpyIsail:

Do you currently have dirt roads longer than 100km live? And can a route be planned over them?

That being said, the vast majority of roads in CT are paved.

And that be the difference

I would suggest that my defination was the orginal intention of waze

Compared to a several stand alone GPS units, the definition we use in CT matches the definition they use in CT... But the more important part of what I said was:

as, even in some parts of the USA, main thoroughfares can be dirt/gravel and you don't really want to label those that way...

Dirt Roads

Live as in "shown on the client and available for routing".
Routes longer than 100km as the crow flies between origin and target, many consecutive pieces probably. Such routes can't be planned over plain streets in Waze, they have to use some highways for the bulk of the distance.

http://world.waze.com/support/ mentions:
1-15 km - all road types
15-20km - all types except street
20-30km - all types except streets and primaries
30-200km - only highway types
200km+ - freeways only

...which does not mention dirt roads explicitely. Also, it is nowhere defined how long a "short" dirt road may be, and if there is a cap for the total dirt in a route.

So, how far can you get over dirt?

Well if that cited chart is correct then what's your point because a 100km "street" is no more route-able than a dirt road?

hmm

I suspect I can find places in NZ where "gravel roads" are over 50km (maybe more) from point to point.

I would have to do some research

That chart is the most exact we have! Too bad it is ambiguous on dirt roads - among a lot more. So - it has to be tried and tested (and over and over again).

We simply have none such here in Europe. Or, hardly any. Those 4x4 roads we have are agricultural-purpose roads that may connect some farms to some plot of land, you will never find gps tracks on them and they are 5km at the most. I could live very well without ever knowing how Waze handles them, but - curiousity! They may learn something that will be of value once Waze starts to route in dependence of vehicle-type, for instance.
