Alternative Junction Naming Scheme for UK

Postby Dave2084 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 8:42 am

Why don't we set up a forum pole? (might have to get Waze to sort it?)

I'd like:
To see road names and junction numbers on all ramps.
To not use "to" at the start of exit ramp names
Have major onward roads in exit ramp names.
Not have city names in exit ramps as it will make them too long.

We really need to draw a line under this, agree a change or keep what we've got. The same goes for the other ongoing "standards" discussions.

Repeating the same thing over and over isn't adding anything to the discussion.

Until WazeHQ man-up and provide a full answer on the issue of adding extra data fields, one way or the other, there is little point in carrying on this discussion.

Darren, have you raised this issue, and have you received any response at all?

It's been suggested that Waze will eventually adjust the traffic jam alerts such that the from street information from the previous intersection will be included in some manner. Then we won't need to put that information in the ramp names. No idea when this will happen, but that doesn't mean we should keep what we have.

There was an excellent comment by WeeeZer14: "The name shown on traffic reports isn't critical because the driver should be using Waze to navigate. A traffic jam is only truly important if it is on your route. If you are using Waze in active navigation mode, Waze will know it is on your route. If Waze still sends you that way, that means that the route with traffic is still quicker than anything else Waze knows."

I would also add: if you're looking at upcoming traffic alerts on your route, the alternative ramp names I suggest will work just fine.

If only that were true. Highway Agency alerts (for example) stating that a road is closed, don't influence Waze routing in any way.

When the M3 was completely closed between J6 and J7 last year, waze would still happily try and route you through it.

Tim, reposting the same post over and over again is not going to change the mind of the people who just do not agree with you.

I think also starting to have a big problem with the attitude that we should "do the same as in the US". We have a completely different road network here. The "standards" were written by US wazers for the US map.

Yes - let's await their input before we all get even more heated and start tearing each other new ones!

One of the new features that was revealed at the NA meeting is higher ranking editors (details yet to be determined) will have to ability to dynamically apply real-time time of day road closures to the Live map. IOW it works directly with Live by creating a virtual traffic jam with an average speed of 0 that lasts X amount of time.

The timeline for this was said to be 6 months (I hope sooner so you have this for the Olympics), and is something that obviously exists already internally as that was what was done for Carmageddon.

Alternative Junction Naming Scheme for UK

We really need to draw a line under these standards discussions once and for all.

The imminent release of Waze v3.0 for android will almost certainly mean in influx of new users (and editors) on the scale of the iOS v3 release.

Let's show them that we know what we want the map to be ... even if it isn't there yet.

If nothing else, we need to agree on exit ramps for junctions without numbers, and for split ramps that go two ways. We don't currently have any guidelines for either of these, and we can't wait to hear from Waze about traffic reports.

PS: I found the original discussion about Ramps/sliproads. The issue of junctions without numbers was discussed, but the wiki wasn't updated.
