How to fix routing error?

Postby bezoarboy » Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:57 am

I'm trying to learn how to fix the map, when I notice errors in routing. Easy stuff (like disallowed turns) I can deal with. But I'm not sure why Waze is making the following suggestion.

At this location, I flagged a routing error.

Trying to go East on Nonantum Rd, rather than just passing through the traffic circle and merging onto Soldiers Field Rd E, Waze recommends exiting the circle, making a hard left on Parsons St, and then a right onto Soldiers Field Rd E.

I can't find an obvious error in the allowed turns, and don't know what else to look for.

Any suggestions? I'm interested in understanding HOW to fix it, so I can do it myself next time.

Some of the allowed turns should be disallowed I think. Like the left from N Beacon St to Parsons. Check for things like that. Many of those intersections are probably straight through only. And if they are, consider bridging the roads as if there was a bridge there. Then there is no way for Waze to tell you to make a wrong turn.

Not sure why the roundabout instruction is there in one of the routes... let me look some more...

Welcome! I know those road names well. :)

Between average speed and the extra junction along the correct route, Waze probably thinks the route it is giving is a little faster. It would help to disable the left turn between these segments. While you're there, look for other turns that should be restricted but aren't. (There is at least one other. Have fun!)

harling, try to route through the area with the live map and the live map navigation add in.

Notice anything strange?

Routing server thinks there is a (corrupted) roundabout there. But no visual indication of a roundabout. And roads have not been edited in months.

Has anyone seen this before?

Maybe this interchange was converted from a roundabout (or a roundabout attempt, anyway), and some of the segments were recycled rather than recreated from scratch? It was a while ago and I'm not the only editor to have visited this corner of the map; that said, I wouldn't put it past myself to do either or both.

I had hoped to be able to leave this as a simple turn-restriction exercise "for the reader", but now that I'm here I might as well rebuild a big chunk of it and clear out any roundabout remains.

By no means was I pointing a finger ;) Just figured you may remember what the area had looked like previously if it was a roundabout at one time.

I agree this went from a teaching example to an advanced troubleshooting issue. We will have to remember to come back to this once the maps update again.

Okay, hopefully I cleared out the offending segment(s). If I missed something, I'll know by the new wave of URs!
