FIXED: Routing wants me to go 123 miles for a 61 mile trip

Postby smegtrek » Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:24 pm

I love the live road updates and harzard warnings from Waze but GPS routing, at least for me, has been very quirky. I use the iPhone version.

My afternoon commute is from Rockville Maryland to Hagerstown Maryland. I always have used Navagon which routes me I-270n to I-70w for a total of 61 miles (I have the traffic option installed).

Everyday Waze insist on a route of 123 miles going on the ICC (toll road) to Baltimore area and back west bound. When I hit the alternate routes the best I get is a 74 mile route I-270n to SR-27w to I-70w. State road 27w is not a good alt to I-270 all the way to I-70.

The odd thing is when I pass by SR-27 it ask me to u-turn at the next exit (Clarksburg). After I pass that exit it will then route me correctly up I-270 and actually show a 20 minutes improvement over the SR-27 suggestion, so if it was that much better why suggest the other in the first place?

The only thing I can think of there is construction on I-270 pass SR-109. Traffic seems to move OK through this area and it is not a major problem, maybe Waze has over weighted it to avoid?

Also why does it keep suggesting the 123 mile route, I been using it for a month now and I thought it was suppose to remember my preferred route.

Any help would be........helpful

There have been a fair number of edits to the waze map on I-270 since Jan. 24, 2012, which is last edits that have gone live. The status page is still saying that we should expect to see edits through Feb. 12, 2012, go live today. I would wait to see if the new tile update corrects the problem. If not we should look at the route again after the tiles update.

I'm guessing something is broken on I-270 between Germantown and Mount Airy. There's a second alternate route that takes you along a state Highway north out of Germantown. It's ignoring the I-270 completely.

Correct it either takes you to 27 to I-70W or 27 to 355.
My morning commute (Hagerstown to Rockville) does not suggest the 123 mile route but it still suggest I go I-70 to 27 but the interesting thing is when I ignore it and go down I-270 it will

1. Try to get me to exit onto 85

2. After 85 it will twice suggest I U-turn on the emergency vehicles turn-around on the median strip ("take a left on I270 followed by a left on I270") which I would say it should never suggest as that is not legal and dangerous.

Those median turnaround shouldn't even be on the map. They're probably are a remnant of the basemap import.

The point where it stops fighting you and allows you to keep traveling on I-270 is where the problem is. As CBenson said, there has been some updating work done on that stretch since the last update, and there's a good possibility that we're getting a complete update sometime in the next 24-48 hours.

Your problem might go away at that point. Watch the date in the lower left-hand corner of the Livemap. When that date changes, see how your next drive goes and if it still isn't fixed, post back here and we'll be able to troubleshoot it a little better.

Live map is still January 24th. Nothing on the status page. Any word elsewhere about the delay in updating the map?

I haven't heard word elsewhere. Wish we would hear something.
