Is there client for Windows Phone 7.5

Postby flyfire » Fri Mar 30, 2012 1:59 pm

Just got my new WP 7.5 phone. And so sadly found that Waze doesn't have client for WP. Is there any plan to develop WP client?

Appears to be in testing. See this video released today. Skip to 1:56 and pause.

Could just be the third party porting effort of the old 2.xx code. In any case the WP7 phones are effectively dead-end products for development as WP8 changes the kernel from Windows CE to Minwin, and also changes the API.

Extremely unlikely that something like that would even happen, much less be found on an internal Microsoft device. Why bother porting old version if your going to port anything?

To think that the kernel change will break all existing apps is nonsense. The kernel has been updated in every version of Windows yet just about any Win32 app runs just fine on everything right up to and including Windows 8. Is the iPhone 4s a dead-end product for development just because there will be a new ios later? Do you think Microsoft is going to start their App store from zero again?

Because it's being ported by users and not MS or Waze? This is a video of MS showing off their new shiny on existing devices that their developers, which can install other apps on their own, are using.

They've done it before to their mobile devices, what makes you think MS won't do it again when they've already stated they're doing it again? We are talking WinCE vs Minwin and phones here, not PCs and an API from 1993 that hasn't been deprecated.

You know why. The only reason given by any reviewer/analyst/potential buyer at this point is lack of apps (even though there are over 80,000 already). It's absolute fooloshness to think or suggest that Microsoft would throw out all the hard work they've done to get a substantial library built up to silence the critics.

Silverlight, gone. XNA, gone. Rewrite your apps if you use either (read the comments).

Edit: MS was telling developers to use XNA and Silverlight as the preferred platforms for developing for WP7. So basically the vast majority of apps will need to rewritten for XAML and DirectX. Yeah your core logic is transferable (maybe), but all your UI and connectivity is borked.

These are just 3 of many articles all saying the same thing. These aren't articles rehashing the same statement from the same person. These have quoted several people from MS saying the same thing. I'm not sure why this is still being debated.

Yes, the truth isn't always told by software companies but getting this close to the release date I'm very certain they know what can and can't be done by the OS. And I agree with the earlier post, MS is not going to dump 80,000 +apps and start over.

Your claim contradicts official Microsoft word.
