New Road Construction Best Practice

Postby garfyville » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:02 pm

I've had a quick look on the Wiki but can't find any Best Practices for creating roads that are currently under construction.

Should the new carriageways initially be created using a road type that doesn't appear on the client, rather that the type it will be when finished, then changed as close to the opening as possible.

If it's best to have the roads appear from the start should the names be sufixed with something along the lines of "Under Construction"?

I wasn't planning on linking the roads up until much closer to the time of opening to avoid obvious problems.

Thanks
Andrew

I don't know if this is 'best practice', but I set the new roads as 'Dirt Tracks' with the name 'Under Construction'. For 1-way segments, I connect the outgoing end to main network, but not the incoming end. Anyone that manages to drive along that segment should get proper routing before they reach the main roads again.

Here's a convenient example I've been working on: https://world.waze.com/editor/?zoom=4&l ... TTTFTTTTFT

That's more or less what I did on the A46 (though I used service road I think dirt road is better).

The important thing is set turn restrictions any any segments you connect and to lock them so that Waze does not (in theory) route along them. I also used no entry (now unknown) direction for all under construction roads.

New Road Construction Best Practice

Thanks for the advice, I'll take at look at the example.
I'm unsure about setting the unknown type as I thought this would allow Waze to route in any direction, locking to the 'correct' direction should mean that only connections at the ends of the sections should route properly as TimBones states.

The important thing here is to enforce turn restrictions so that Waze does not route anyone down these incomplete roads.

Make sure that you are familiar with the mechanics of the lock mechanism for WME described here:
Modifying the lock option (and some explanations)

Remember that if you "Q" the "W" on a junction node it will now not enable turns for directions that are not allowed, so if you set the direction to unknown on a segment then Q W the junction nodes(s) was will not route down it at all as long as you lock it. I've used this successfully in limited access roads for Motorway Service Area's (MSA)

Better yet is not to connect the incomplete roads to any other roads until they are done. Turn restrictions set and dirt roads can still be routed on.
