Removing (N), (S), (E), (W), (CW), (ACW) from map

Postby timbucks » Sun Apr 22, 2012 4:01 pm

In the UK we add a directionality indicator to dual carriageway roads which is good for traffic reports but just makes the client map look untidy - you'll drive down a motorway and the name that appears will alternate between directions (you'll get M1 (S) then the road will appear to be named M1 (N) and then M1 (S) again, etc)

Could the client strip off the bracketed information for displaying the map and only use it when generating traffic reports?

They need to add a compass direction field as well as the shield generation field(s).

You'd have to keep the bracketed bit for navigation as well as traffic reports. But I agree with the idea, it looks daft on the map sometimes.

Why? It's not like the popups are any helpful anyways in trying to pinpoint where an accident is anyway; you're still gonna hunt for it on the actual map. Besides, if you're in navigation mode, waze doesn't care what the road is named when it determines avoidances. I removed (well actually, never added) cardinal directions on any of the freeways here and it keeps the maps looking good and doesn't really affect navigation at all.

I'm not going to hunt it for on the actual map. The popup is helpful to tell me if the accident is on a road I may take. Absent the direction I find the popup useless as I don't know whether my lanes are effected or not.

Because it's useful to know in which direction a report is referring to, particularly as manual reports don't actually affect traffic!

By deleting cardinals I would hazard that you're going against convention for your area and should probably stop!

I didn't delete cardinal directions, they were never there. I never put them in because it hopelessly clutters the map. And that's only on the mainline descriptions for freeways; they exist everywhere else, such as surface streets and ramps.

If I see "Moderate Traffic, Hwy 401 EB, Toronto", the cardinal direction is not particularly useful information as it could be at any spot in about 40 km of roadway.

In smaller cities it may be moderately useful, but then again I'd guess that most manual traffic reports are the result of "are you stuck in traffic?" prompts.

Waze should really come up with things like provinces and directionality in their road attributes.

It is up to Waze to fix the notifications to make them more useful. That doesn't mean we should not have the cardinals in there. They absolutely need to be. We've given Waze lots of ideas on how to improve this in the future, such as including the name of the nearest overpass or exit name/number. "Moderate Traffic, Hwy 401 E near Exit 14" or " ... near Main St"

Yes, but the map also zooms in to the area in question, so one can at least (usually) identify a cross street or two. But if there's no direction indicated, it's useless as you don't know if it's the direction you're going in or not.

I just went through a bunch of freeways along my commute here in LA and added cardinal directions because "Accident on I-110, Carson" doesn't help me nearly as much as "Accident on I-110 N, Carson"

Do the road shields (hopefully coming to UK one day) hide the cardinality from the map, yet preserve them for traffic alerts?
