Figuring out what users are asking for

Postby neoteric » Mon May 07, 2012 5:30 pm

I just started editing, and I confess I am finding it tough to figure out what some of the map problem reports are saying/how to resolve them.

Here's a typical example: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat ... TTTTTTTTFT

Looking back along the track, I don't see any overpass actually on the track. Since the track is on a busy urban street, and the report was created at an intersection that I think may be controlled by traffic lights, I figure maybe the user waited until they were stationary to create the report, so maybe the issue was even further back, at the complex intersection on El Camino Real, which really does have an overpass: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat ... TTTTTTTTFT

However, I can't see anything obvious wrong with that intersection and, given its location (ahem), I doubt it is incorrect.

In general, if I do "due diligence" on a report and simply can't see anything amiss, should I just go ahead and mark it "Not identified" after a week?

I can't figure that one out. No turn restrictions in the area, no overpasses per Bing and Google; maybe someone was just hitting buttons.

If you can't find an issue, mark it as not identified.

Many map issues that are submitted from the application will not result in a map fix. Things such as:

* Playing with the application (it looks like a game, right)
* Entering a destination or searching for a POI in the wrong field
* Bad POI or street address data from external providers that cannot be directly fixed on the Waze Map
* Client side issues that are not map issues (hidden streets when autozoom is being used, being zoomed out too far)
* Infrastructure issues that cause a partial, bad route, proceed to hilighted route, etc.

Basically you can't expect that if it's entered as a map issue / update request that it always requires a map update. Do the best job you can to identify a map issue based on the information provided without any ability to identify the user who submitted the issue or being able to request additional information.
