How to rename a place of business?

Postby coffingd » Sat May 26, 2012 1:33 am

Hi I am a totally newbie to Waze map editing and have just completed my first set of modifications in my area. After a few trial errors I believe I got the hang of it all and made sure all my junctions were done correctly.

My question has to do with errors that the map shows for place of business. Currently it shows the improper names of the local businesses in my area of the map. For example the business is a new Bank but the place of business shown on the map currently is a old credit union. Is there any way for me to edit those names and make it correct?

If you turn on the landmark option you should be able to edit it there. If there is no landmark for that place of buisness then it is not possible to change. That info comes from Waze's providors. If that is the case then close the UR as not identified and move on.

If they are getting their directions from Google, I go to the Google map, click on the closed business. There is a report an error button, I think it was under the more selection. Anyway, you get a list of problems and one of them is Business Permanently Closed. I don't know how long it takes Google to correct at their end, but it's a start.

THANKS that did it! I didn't realize what the Landmark meant. I clicked it and was able to rename all the Places of Business that Waze calls "Landmarks". Then I also was able to redefine the landmark perimeter to be a lot more accurate and went ahead and added the parking lots correctly too along with the proper parking lot roads. I go to a large church and the church was defined all wrong but now it is completely fixed.

So now the question is how long does it take for WAZE to get the updated info out to my map on my mobile device?

I don't know if this is something new but I was also able to add brand new "Landmarks" that were not previously showing up at all on Waze. Very cool!

I just used the + icon and selected Landmark to add not only the complete area that encompasses the landmark by drawing around the satellite image of the property then finishing the area by double clicking but it also allows you to define all the specific properties of that landmark like notes. So I added to the notes things like the total address, phone numbers, website, etc. SWEET

How to rename a place of business?

Postby gettingthere » Sat May 26, 2012 6:22 pm

FWIW, the general recommendation is not to map commercial POI's in the Waze landmark layer ( in counties such as the USA with good external data). There are multiple third party providers of POI data integrated with Waze (Google, Bing, Yelp, and FourSquare). Some of these providers include additional info with the search results such as street address, phone number, reviews, etc. the Waze landmark layer does not allow for this additional info properly (i don't believe it shows or us useful in the search results). In addition, as you have discovered the data changes often and we don't need 15 million + landmarks to maintain in Waze.

I would suggest deleting the commercial landmark on the Waze map and use the external providers for finding POI's.

I would also like to add that for parking lot roads, only define the outer perimeters / main arteries (if is a large one like for a mall) and not each individual row. In the client if each row is defined then it starts to look very cluttered. If you haven't alerady, please read waze.com/wiki expecially the best practices section.

It's okay to mark fast-food drive-throughs if you find Waze is "snapping" a user onto the nearest street and causing fake traffic jams.

I didn't belive it happened myself, until it happened to ME a few days ago. So now I am marking all drive-thru's that are near the primary roads (for now).
