Not likely. Read all the arguments against it here on the forum.

Looking for the arguments . . . nope, can't really find any, except that maybe it's low priority over other features.

One person says that the data will get old - but that can happen for any type of data that Waze uses, I don't see how speed limits are different in that regard.

Another person says that many people will disable it - but that's fine, it doesn't have to be for everybody.

This is actually one of the features my parents love about their GPS device. They use it all the time, as they're often not paying attention to the speed limits, and we live in a country with lots of speed cameras. This particular device also allows for manual editing of the speed limits, so all of the routes we take often (to work and back, to shopping centers, etc) are as accurate as we can make them.

Can Waze add to Show Current Speed Limit?

I would be in support of this feature if:

* speed limits are not shown or editable in WME
* the map community (volunteer) map editors are not responsible to maintain this data
* Waze uses an external source for this data
* Wazers can update the data from the Waze application via interfacing with the third party database of speed limits

Why keep this functionality out of WME?

The map community is, as I understand it, volunteer work. They are not "responsible" for any of the map data, unless they decide to become an area manager. If you don't want the extra burden, don't bother yourself with it.

It works pretty much like a wiki. You can decide to tweak a single road and never do anything else, or you can decide to become an area manager and do heavy work on it - or you can do something in between. Doesn't really matter.

If Waze is able to find and use a decent database of speed limits the speed limits will be in this external database. Waze can allow updates to the database in the application. The data doesn't have to be in WME.

This is exactly how the gas pricing currently works in the Waze Beta for the USA. The gas pricing has nothing to do with the Waze Map Editor.

It's just another thing to maintain. Don't see the point when you can just look out the window, and to be fair, it's EXACTLY what you should be doing as a responsible driver.

Do you want to be responsible for keeping the speed limits up to date the 55 MILLION+ miles of road just in the United States alone?

Bad data is worthless data, and regardless of where speed limit data comes from, it will have errors.
Due to those errors, adding speed limits, regardless of it being in an external database or not, will make WME look 10x worse than this, everywhere; because just like wrong location data from search results, we'll have endless URs for speed data. Some of which will be from trolls, so you have to research every single one, or know the area perfectly.

And you have to support insanity like this:

And we're already inundated by users reporting cameras everywhere they see an Opticom or traffic monitoring camera and you expect them to get speed limits right? Lunacy.

All for something that's solved by simply paying attention like you should be doing as a safe responsible driver.

Can Waze add to Show Current Speed Limit?

Postby gettingthere » Sun May 27, 2012 4:59 pm

A lot of good points. But I suspect that Waze is eventually going to add speed limits so at least keep them out of the Map Editor so ALL of the Wazers can maintain them from the application instead of < 1% of Wazers that are map editors.

Should never be submitted as an Update Request to WME if there is a clearly labeled option to correct speed limits.

I agree. It's of dubious value and going to be littered with errors that detract from the entire Waze experience. Actually I feel the same about gas prices. It would have been much easier just for Waze to work with Gas Buddy (and others) to add a 'set a route to the gas station in Waze'. Find the gas station you want in the Gas Buddy app and route there with Waze.

But surely Waze still thinks gas stations will give a discount to Wazers. Gas stations have zero incentive to support helping their potential customers find the lowest price in the area or give an extra discount on a product that has tiny margins.

If by "you" you mean one person, individually, no. If by "you," you mean the community, yes.

Bad data is worthless data, and regardless of where speed limit data comes from, it will have errors.

"Bad data" is everywhere in the maps already. I'm correcting stuff all the time. My own town needs a lot of work. If you're scared of "bad data," you probably shouldn't be using Waze.

And you have to support insanity like this:

Not really. Just use the base speed limit. The community probably already understands the school speed limits.

In places where there's a lot of reporting going on, there should probably be added better tools for managing the large volumes of data - it already looks like it's a problem.

Don't see the point when you can just look out the window, and to be fair, it's EXACTLY what you should be doing as a responsible driver.

Well, I could say the same thing about a lot of Waze's current functionality :?. Or I could say the same about the feature in other GPS units, but it's still a popular feature, and a lot of people still like it.
