Dunedin and Surrounds

Postby JAYSONHOOGY » Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:51 am

Hi, even though it is quiet in these NZ forums, I thought I would say Hi. I am a new wazer. Just started after discovering waze before Christmas. I live in Dunedin and the maps down here aren't that comprehensive. I have done a lot of mapping to try and get them up to date. I have also done a bit of work outside the city, from my trip to Central Otago and Southland over the Christmas break. Anyone else working on the maps this far south? It is a bit frustrating that it is taking a few days for the map to update with my changes but it is no biggie.

Hi, just discovered Waze over the Xmas holidays too and having fun mapping roads on a few trips I've taken out of town. I'm in Auckland and there's a lot of roads not mapped here too, as well as a number of errors to be fixed with intersections and routing etc. I've seen updates come through in rural areas that I've done, but haven't seen the updates in the city/suburbs yet. I've just started looking through the forums so will see if I can find an answer.
How long has it been taking for your updates to appear?

ispyisail it looks like you have not done all the street names again?

I know you are just trying to get as many points as possible, but can you please finish one area before you start another? I am constantly having to clean up behind you, putting in street names and setting junctions up correctly.

Map for Dunedin is now updated

Admittedly I haven't added road names but the roads and junctions should be not bad.

Hopefully locals will pick up Waze and add the street names

Hi ispy,

Sorry if it seemed otherwise, but I am not trying to start a fight, and don't plan on complaining to Waze. I do appreciate the time you are putting into mapping the roads on Waze, I just think it would be good if you would finish the job for the areas you map before starting on a new area. You get 80% of the way there, why not finish it?

I know it is tempting to just trace all the roads on the maps for maximum points, but you also get points for adding street names, and it is much more valuable for other users if you have street names as well.

Also, by tracing all the roads, but not naming them, it makes it hard for an area manager to see what areas need work, as I need to zoom in a long way to work out what streets have names and which ones don't.

I suspect it also takes away incentive for others to do any work on an area (you have already taken the 'easy' points).

So please, don't take this the wrong way, we are all working towards the same goal here :-)

BTW the way you have done Rotorua is much easier for me to work with, all roads are still red so they stand out, thanks :-)

Maps in Rotorua are out of whack with reality by up to 5 meters though, not sure how they will work out, will see next time I am down there. Probably just get some issues where there are roads close to each other.

My 100% focus is to maximize the user base not gain points

More users = better results

In my opinion if somebody from Dunedin now installs waze on their phone they will be more than twice as likely to use it.

If you install the new beta waze client on you phone you will see that are introducing search category's

No need for street names, you just search for gas station or coffee etc etc

Having said that to do agree street names do need to be added at some point

I got side tracked, I've got a system once I get going I can convert mass amount of roads at one time, I was still in the first phase.

You know I was happily adding road names until you told me off :(

I am a little worried about this. Having said that GPS traces can be out by that much as well so Im in a wait and see mode.

(you have already taken the 'easy' points).

You know the irony is you guys who have been wazing for over the last 12 months + have already taken the easy points.

:)

I did manage to find some SH1 unfinished at bluff and Cape Reinga

Next map update SH1 should be finished from cape to bluff (that's where i've been side tracked)

All major roads should now be finished in Northland (if there ever is such a thing)
