How does the Garmin connect to servers to get live traffic data? Satellite? I don't use them, so I'm really wondering. (And the Garmin wasn't/isn't free.)

This seems to be the case with me. I use Waze on my iPad(3) with no data plan just WiFi. When I leave my house (with WiFi) the app works fine even giving me voice navigation all the way to my work (with no WiFi). When I leave my work (with no WiFi) it gives me voice navigation all the way home (with WiFi). When I look at my driving statistics it always shows my return trips home but not my outgoing trips to work. So yes, in my experience you need a connection at the end of the trip for the trips to upload. But I am thankful this will give me GPS navigation without a connection, something other paid apps will not do.
Cheers.

Yes, I realize this but since a constant data connection = expensive data plan and I can get live traffic for free with my Garmin GPS. Plus I get gas at a station on my street. So for me, offline is the waze to go. Cheers.

Is it at all possible to use the current Symbian client 2.1.99.114 offline? If I cancel the prompt for a network connection, the app immediately terminates. The same happens if I try to start waze using WiFi, after leaving its coverage waze immediately complains about a lost connection and prompts for a new one.
(However I know that the client is capable of running and even navigating (using stored mapping data), if it is temporarily unable to create connection to servers, while it already is online - rarely this happens. But as soon as it notices getting offline...)
...with the good old crashing
Symbian 2.1.99.114 (N-E52), while
trying to get used to the good new crashing Android 3.7.xx.yyy (SG-A2).

So why not just use your Garmin then? What does Waze offer to you if you can't use any of the features that require a data connection?

Depends on the model. Generally traffic data that is broadcast via inaudible spectrum on FM radio stations. TMC.

The solution is to map without paving. Use aerial, gps tracks, your drives (when recorded), etc. Yes, sometimes these other methods are not ideal either.
