Caveats that some features are limited in different parts of the world, but if you are using a Ver 3.x of the application (android / iPhone) you can do POI search directly in the application.
The bottom bar lets you choose which system is searched (IE: Waze internal, contacts, google, bing, foursquare, yelp)

If I am navigating to a place using the name rather than the adress, I usually search for it in apple maps, and then copy paste the adress into the waze search bar. If find this a lot more effective than using he built in search on waze. It would be nice if the Waze Team could collaborate with Apple, and have a "Open in Waze" button added to the screen you get when you click on a result (red pin) in Apple Maps. This button could open the waze app, and take you directly to the screen you see after you select an adress on the Waze search screen (to the screen where you either select "Go", "Routes", or "Options").
