Waze Tells me I have no GPS Reciever?

Postby hokie4life001 » Sun Feb 14, 2010 6:51 pm

Hi, this app looks really cool and i wanna use it but it will simply not work on my Device, I have a Samsung Omnia Windows Phone from Verizon which is listed on this site as a device for the app, this last week i downloaded the CF03 Update that unlocks the GPS on my phone and it works fine with Google Maps, but i want turn by turn directions. every time i load up the Waze app it says my GPS reciever is set on auto and detects the comm port for it and then it loads up the program and tells me that i have no GPS reciever and does not give me any options to do anything, i was just wondering if anyone with the same phone or Verizon might know what i can do?, because it's frustrating the hell out of me

Hi,
if auto-detection doesn't work have a look how to manually tell waze the port of your GPS here: http://world.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1973&hilit=gps+com+port&sid=09eb58cd44512378ce3dfc0e1e9a9a80

Since others may not look in the VA thread.. :)

This pertains to the Samsung Omnia Sch-i910 on Verizon Mobile. DON'T ASK ME ABOUT OTHER COMBINATIONS. I don't know because I didn't invest any sweat making those work. I own an Omnia on Verizon, and got it going on mine. :)

Early release Omnias will need the upgrade that Hokie4life refers to, but that's not the end of the road.

Verizon did open up GPS for other applications, but did not enable the "External GPS" control in the Windows Mobile Settings control panel. The GPS applet is on your Omnia, but a registry setting prevents it from being displayed. There is a hack available to correct this.

Once you have the "External GPS " applet available on the "System" tab of your settings:

On the "Program" tab, select "COM8".
On the "Hardware" tab select "(None)" and 4800 Baud rate.
On the Access tab make sure "Manage GPS automatically" is checked.

I know that "None'" sounds counter intuitave, but it works! :)

ahh see i used the help feature on the phone to look for gps settings and it said something about using "external GPS" settings but you are right it does not show up under my settings, any link to this hack? and is it a risky hack? i already had my phone wiped once during the CF03 update and i'd like to avoid it again

It's a pretty simple registry hack. Standard disclaimers of "here there be Tigers" do apply if you go in the wrong place, do the wrong thing, etc. That being said, you can always reload the upgrade image if you need to. :)

If you're worried about unknown reg files and what they may do to your phone, you can always hack the registry manually to be assured you're only doing the one thing you want to.

You'll neet a application to edit your registry. PHM registry editor is a popular choice, and free.

1) Navigate to : HKLM\Control Panel\GPS Settings\
2) If you want to be able to undo this fix, record the contents of the "Redirect" Key so you could add it back.
3) Delete the "Redirect" key.
4) Reboot your device.
5) Look in Settings... System. External GPS should now be available.
Once you reboot, you should see your External GPS icon.

alphaaggeek, this is my first attempt at a regedit and i tried it last night and couldn't get it to work. i first deleted the file in the second attachment, soft reset and the gps control didn't appear, then deleted the file in the second attachment, soft reset and no gps still. neither worked, so i restored a backup i did right before i did the regedit. can't figure out how to past images into post, so i tried attaching images. they show up as links in my preview, but i've seen images, even gifs attached in posts before.

do i delete the first one:
regeit1red1.tif
regeit1red1.tif (207.02 KiB) Viewed 1953 times

or the second one:
regeit1red2.tif
regeit1red2.tif (102.05 KiB) Viewed 1954 times

It appears to have no value set

any help greatly appreciated.
