Entrance fees = toll roads?

Postby mapcat » Sun Jul 22, 2012 1:16 am

Edit: Split from Toll road checklist - US / Canada

Re parks: Do you think someone wanting to avoid toll roads would be surprised if they got to a state park and saw an entrance fee? I never thought of that as a toll before. And if there's some sort of "Your route has tolls" message on the screen anytime Waze routes you through any tolled segment, this could cause problems.

Well, according to the wiki and sunpass it is considered a toll road and not a park fee so it was included.

That's effectively what Trail Ridge Road is in Colorado. It's the part of US-34 that goes through Rocky Mountain National Park. There's also Pikes Peak and Mount Evans, both national parks and in those two cases they're roads to nowhere.

OK, so those are special cases. But for the generic road into a state park, tourist attraction, or any other semi-private road where someone asks you for $5 and hands you a ticket, is it safe to say don't worry about it?

You bring up a good point. It is something that probably needs some discussion to come to a consensus.

At this point if the local transit athority is collecting a toll to use that bridge or road then I am making it a toll. To me that is what a toll road is.

I can see both sides of the issue. It will be helpful to know that the park they are going to is going to cost them, something that if they didn't plan ahead and see that there is a fee, at least they are now knowing.

Is this going to be used to mark pay for parking lots/garages? What if the parking lot is pay only durring special events like football games? Should we be marking airport parking? (Sunpass is accepted at Tampa Intl.)

This should probably be slit off since it is not on OT.

Additionally are genpop going to start marking every segment that ends on someone paying some kind of fee? Roads that have parking meeters? Is it going to be like marking every lane in a parking lot except this time with conseqences more than it looks like crap in the client and causes additional load on the servers?

The one counter argument I can make for this is if you go to a park and they are going to charge you they probably would let you turn around at no cost. Same thing could be said about Parking garages. I would love to see this happen on an actual toll road. My thinking is no harm no foul. We should not be here to do someones homework whether a park costs something or not. On a side note. A landmark for a park with some kinda of fee schedule in a detailed description I would probably see having potential.

Toll road checklist - US / Canada

Postby gettingthere » Sun Jul 22, 2012 4:34 pm

A park entrance fee is to visit a park. A parking lot fee is to park your car. A speeding ticket is when you are driving too fast. These are NOT toll roads.

Toll Roads are a road with a fee specifically to use the road. Period.

So, for the example of Trail Ridge Rd (US-34), to travel from Estes Park to Granby using US-34 you need to pay a fee, is it a Toll or a Park Fee? Officially it's a Park Fee, but effectively it's a Toll as a portion of that fee is for road maintenance. There's other routes, but they're much much longer.

And that road is commonly traveled by people who are not visiting the park?
