EDIT: new points system is now in effect. Please see this post.

=========================================================

As you might know, we've been working on revising the points and rank system. We've taken into account comments that we received, as well as other factors such as the ratio between different activities (such as driving vs. editing) that we've seen so far.
Our goal is to encourage people to be active in all aspects of waze; drive (whether new, pacman or existing roads), share (send reports) and update (edit maps, house numbers etc.)

Please keep in mind the new system will change your current points and rank... some will lose and some will gain, but all in all this will allow everybody a fair shot to gain points and rank higher. The points total will be much lower, and the new system will replace the current (i.e. it will run on all your data from the first time you started wazing).

We'll start with accumulating points:

Action || Parameter || Points

Map editing || Save 200 actions || 100
House Numbers || Update 100 numbers || 100
Reports || Send / respond to 50 reports || 100
new road || Record 5 miles || 100
Pacman roads || Drive 20 miles || 100
Known roads || Drive 67 miles || 100
Idle - no action || 1 week of inactivity || -20

Next up, number of stars:

star(s) || points
* || 1000
** || 5000
*** || 20000
**** || 60000
***** || 120000

The number of stars gives you seniority in map editing (i.e. 4 stars user can overrule a decision of 3 stars or lower), as well as other features planned for the future. It's also the indication displayed to other users, next to your nick name, when you choose to be visible.

And last, permissions for map editing:
User history || rights
0-1 stars, 0-600 map editing points || 1 mile radius from driven routes
2-3 stars, 600-1200 map editing points || 5 miles radius from driven routes
4-5 stars, 1200+ map editing points || 10 miles radius from driven routes
Area manager || manual polygon
Regional manager || manual polygon
State manager || state polygon

Thanks

Is this 2-3 stars AND 600-1200 map editing points or 2-3 stars OR 600-1200 map editing points (first would make most sense to me)?

Personally I think you need to award your map editors a bit more. Making 100 points with 200 save actions takes hours of spare time (vs. making 100 points just driving 10 miles with Waze on), so it should be rewarded accordingly, so you will actually encourage people to edit maps.

Hell, I've been at it a month and a half and I only have 1548 edits under my belt! :lol:

Edit: When is this going into effect?

I would like to see some awards for users who sit in slow traffic and report that to the others via the automated events.

Don't forget an anti-spam filter. I don't want to see people sending fake reports every 2 minutes just to increase their score ;)

While taking a long route scenic route to visit a friend today I started to wonder just how many points you get per mile... now I know :) Once the system is in place could that be placed in the wiki? I think my new moto will be "Wiki all knowledge", so the accumulated community knowledge isn't confined to the forums... might a point system be put into place for that too?

Oh, and I'm doubly glad to hear that we'll get (some) points for munching pre-munched roads, because I've pretty much exhausted every possible alternate route between home, work, and school that isn't more than fifteen minutes out of the way! :lol:

I completely agree with Sketch about awarding map editors.

I also think that when you select multiple roads with the same problem to edit all at once that instead of just getting one point you should get a point for each road you change in that selection. Otherwise you individually select each similar problem and change it to get the points...

How about more points if you waze in a high crime area? :lol:

Although I like munching new roads I thoroughly enjoy fixing some of the large 4 to 5 level overpasses all over the city. I have done some massive edits that have fixed many peoples routing (and sometimes crashing) problems including my own. I have fixed a 20 mile stretch of Interstate, access roads, and intersections due to construction. All in all I have probably spent 12 to 16 hours on the Interstate stretch alone none of which driving would have fixed. Seems kinda like a slap in the face.

Don't get me wrong, I am just discussing, I willingly gave up my time to edit the maps. I understand that driving a road will be rewarded the best but IMO editing the map to correct mistakes that driving would not correct should be awarded a lot better. Time wise map editing should be almost equivalent to driving and un-driven road. I can drive 20 miles in 20 minutes but there is no way you can do 200 saves in 20 minutes unless you are just spamming the save button with useless edits. And without proper editing the routing would not have worked for the 20 miles driven :D

Once again, just stating my point so don't take it the wrong way 8-)

Edit: Although I have not edited a single house number, it certainly does not encourage one of the most tedious tasks if only 1 point is rewarded for a single address. It would probably take a couple hours to do a whole neighborhood yet you would only get a couple hundred points. Unless it is more automated in cartouche now...still need to try that out.
