[Mostly FIXED] City Smudge fixes (L5)

Talking of city smudge fixes, there's still a city smudge connecting Cheriton (Hants) with Cheriton (Kent). Both are outside my area, so I can't see what the exact problem is, but I guess there are still some segments in each which are just "Cheriton".

I know this was discussed in December, but I think the people trying to solve it were prevented from doing so by WME problems and then got diverted elsewhere. As this thread seems to be going all over the country, I thought I'd raise it again here, rather than resurrect the original Cheriton thread.

I'd be grateful if someone who can work on both could have a look and sort out the segment naming.

It's been fixed (in Dec, by Dave), but the city layer doesn't get updated very often (3-6 months), so it's still waiting for an update.

With apologies to my elders and betters, I don't think that's absolutely so. The city layer is updated at the same frequency as the map, if the appearance of new "cities" and the changes to the smudges is anything to go by. What hasn't been updated is the removal of city names that are no longer supported by any named road segments.

Over the last few weeks, I've been adjusting the boundaries of the villages in the Sevenoaks/Tonbridge/Royal Tunbridge Wells areas, changing segment names accordingly, and the smudges for all of them have changed with each update. So Fordcombe, Langton Green, Penshurst, Oxted, Limpsfield, Sundridge (where I accidentally named a couple of streets in Oxted with the Sundridge city name), and many more, have all had their smudges added, changed, removed as appropriate. However, there is still a Tunbridge Wells city name (but no smudge) visible on the map southwest of Royal Tunbridge Wells, even though there are no segments supporting it, and there's a Redhill (Surrey) name still visible, again no smudge, just north of Bletchingley, also with no segments named that.

This makes me believe there is still at least one identically-named segment in both Hants and Kent instances (the shape of the smudge suggest at least four segments overall). I can't identify them using WMECH, but the fact the smudge is still there is an indication, when it changes elsewhere to reflect segment edits.

I got rid of the "Chandlers Ford (Hants)" form of the city name (there were actually three different forms in use) on 9th January - the name and city boundary is still on WME.

And.....

Client map tiles don't get updated just because of city boundary changes, only when segments contained within them get changed. I.e. if you remove a smudge in the WME, the map tiles between the ends of the smudge will not get updated to remove the smudge until one of the road segments is modified within that map tile.

OK, I really don't understand this.

I've seen smudges change shape and disappear after editing the segments to remove the city name, eg both Tunbridge Wells and Redhill (Surrey) where the name persists but the smudges have gone, and Sundridge, where the smudge ran west to Oxted after I misnamed a couple of streets, but when I corrected that, the smudge went back to just cover Sundridge itself. But there is definitely a purple city smudge for Chandlers Ford (Hants) just by where the name persists, and the streets bounding the eastern end were edited, as you said, on 9/1, so I'd have expected the smudge to disappear with the 11/1/13 release and subsequent.

I'm only talking about WME - I know client tiles get updated later still - but there are plenty of segments on tiles which fall under the extended Cheriton smudge which were updated in early- to mid-January and David did a lot of edits at the Kent end on the 22nd. Does that mean that the extended smudge should disappear with the next update?
