I'd like to see that points be calculated by the server rather than the client. I'm not sure if that's how it's truly handled now, but it feels like if you drive somewhere without cell coverage you're missing out.

It's already calculated by the server; what the client gives you is simply an approximation. This is why you'll see discrepancies at times that resolve themselves after a day or so.

Once we have the handset released in the various markets - need iPhone and Nokia/WinMo to be in place since this required handset side development as well.

YES!! Points for each edit you make!!! Tedious edits, selecting multiple roads, intersections at once will reward you for each edit! This is so rewarding for those who heavily edit the maps. Thank you Waze team :D :D

I had a thought that for existing miles, the faster the route, the less heavily the points should be weighted; i.e. i can get home in 20 minutes by taking the interstate, but may take 30-45 minutes by taking local streets. This could translate for undriven roads as well.

Any update yet on when the new system is coming out? What's holding it up?

We are still checking out some issues with the new clients that should support this change and looking how exactly to execute this in a clean manner.

I don't have any particular axe to grind on points or rights - everyone's use will be different and the system will always be a compromise for all concerned. I do have one observation, however.

In my area we have people plonking new roads into the system but, for whatever reason, not completing the associated editing tasks i.e. we get a lot of new 'completed' roads but they aren't joined together.

Now, I'm quite happy to follow along behind them and tidy up the map, create intersections, delete all the unused odds and ends of roads but without a suitable editing range outside my driven area (or area manager rights, I guess) I'm unable to do so. The fact that they will then get the majority of the points for the task also makes it a little thankless in my view. Editing the map takes a different skill-set from driving the roads and it appears that not everyone has those skills in abundance!

Driving round the area just to gain map editing rights isn't really feasible but I'll do it soon just to get rid of the displayed errors, I'd just like to suggest that a little more weighting on the edits might be appropriate in these cases.

It has already been stated, but map editing deserves a boost. I am still grumbling over miles and miles of roads in my neighborhood that are not labeled, corrected, connected to each other etc. Driving is using the program, recording new roads and editing them making the app useful for the average person (they are probably not computer geeks).

I like spending an hour now and then editing the map and taking detours with the car or in public transport to record new roads. Every road I touch will be reviewed/edited/corrected by myself, insofar I am able to. That way, we will build this app to something useful in Europe. Currently, I cannot even navigate from my street to my work, although the route is completely there and driven more than 20 times. We got to get those things working if you want to attract mainstream.

I am not looking for a boost in points for map editing independently. Rather, I would reward editing/labeling your own routes better. If doing all things together, the point rate gets higher than usual.
That gives an incentive to 'clean your own sh**', putting it mildly.

Second remark: taking points away is a major negative experience. You don't want to scare your users away with stiff measures. I would only take away points when people don't use the app for 3 months or so. People do go on vacation now and then :D
