Non-existent town on map

Postby dbrightwell » Tue Jan 25, 2011 1:16 am

A town called "Belmont" keeps popping up on my map at various places around the county... but this is no such place.

If you turn on the map editor color scheme, does it show a square area?

If so, it's a known issue. Haven't gotten clear instructions on how Waze HQ wants to handle it.

What's a color scheme?

Yes it is a known issue. Not sure if support knows why, but they are aware.

On the client, you can pick a color scheme. The one called Map editor shows town boundaries as shaded regions.

In my area, Belmont overlaps the real towns so you can't see the square for it.

I also have some towns (Lakeside) that are narrow long regions that I can trace through multiple states.

Anyway, if you can find a lone square with the wrong name, chances are at the center is a road segment with the wrong town information applied. Too bad we can't see town boundaries in the Cartouche.

My recent conversations with support seemed to think it was a problem with Cartouche guessing the wrong town name when a new segment was recorded. They were talking about turning off the auto-population of the town for newly recorded segments to deal with the problem for now.

Oh, duh. I was thinking Cartouche.

Here's a case where it happens without the square. There is no town of Franklin, but there is a Franklin street nearby. I've verified that Franklin is in not in the city name for any of the surrounding roads.

Yep, when I turn on the map editor color scheme, the town outlines blink on and off along with the name. So far Belmont is the only name I see that's not real. Sometimes it overlays another town entirely, sometimes it overlaps and sometimes it's out in the middle of nowhere. For now, I guess I'll just try and ignore it.

Each week or month I see a new "phantom" town in my city. Currently Belmont, but has been places such as Cleveland, Washington, Lakeside and Columbus off the top of my head.

For me, it's, "Brandon." I didn't notice it until the past few weeks.

But at least there IS a Brandon FL. How far is it from your location?

The REAL Belmont, IL is about 150 miles from me.
