Ramps/sliproads

Postby xteejx » Fri May 27, 2011 8:10 pm

Hi UK peeps,

I have looked on our UK section of the wiki and can't find a proper answer. There doesn't seem to be a set convention for it.
Ramp/sliproad names from motorways or even normal ones from dual carriageways or A-roads.
What are the rest of you doing for these, and how would these display in the client?

The format I used for the entire Scottish motorway network was, eg, "M8 - Jct 2". I didn't think the "to..." that a lot of people like was necessary and just add extra things to read on the client!

Thanks for clearing that up dm...what about for smaller dual carriageways putting, for example a sliproad on the A249 northbound "A249 - Iwade/Lower Halstow" or just "Iwade/Lower Halstow", since that's what the sign says and the driver is already on the A249?

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51 ... 15.86,,0,0 << streetview of the sign for the sliproad

Not sure which would be better. Don't wanna go ahead and do it if it seems wrong :P

It's something I've only just started considering myself when I added a couple of sliproads on the A12 and what I'm doing is to use the name of the road the ramp commits you to. So at M25 (J28) / A12 - Brentwood I've labelled the on-slips with the Route & Direction "M25 (CW)" and off slips with junction info like "J28 - A12, Brentwood".

Does that work for you guys?

Personally I think it's information overload! I did that for a few then realised it was too much on the client!

I reckon if you know where you're going you don't need it and if you don't you have guidance on and... don't need it!
Just my opinion, I understand it's unlikely to be universal!

I think it has to be remembered that the ramp name serves more than one purpose: one is to give driving directions (I agree that it is preferably short); the other is to alert other drivers to potential problems on their route and then it needs to be a bit more detailed.

I've recently labelled the ramps at M6-J6 (Gravelly Hill/Spaghetti):
http://world.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=3 ... FFFFFFTTTT
and M6-J7 (Great Barr)
http://world.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=4 ... FFFFFFTTTT

I seem to spend a lot of time on some of these ramps and prior to naming them the client was giving reports that just said there was heavy traffic in Birmingham (not entirely helpful) and I believe this format works well, but I'm open to a certain amount of persuasion.

Ramps/sliproads

Postby Dave2084 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:51 am

Originally I was simply doing "M1 J24" etc, however, more recently I have been amending it to be "M1 (S) J24" etc as when navigating I found it useful to know if I was going Southbound or northbound etc when joining the motorway. it also fits itin better with the existing road naming convention.

I decided on "J" rather than "jct" or other to both stop info overload and to match the naming system on the signage on the roads.

I do agree we need this in the wiki, I think I raised this a year ago but there was never any sort of agreement on what we should have, hence we all seem to be doing something different :-(

I have historically used "M8 - Jct 15" as my template but, like Dave, have been pondering adding the direction too.

If we can agree on something here I'll get the wiki updated this evening!

How about...
<name> (<direction>) - <number>
eg
M8 (W) - J15

Do we need to distinguish between off/on ramps?

I have been doing mine as "M5 (S) J26 Exit Slip", although I will probably remove the "Slip" as it's not needed. Distinguishing between entry and exit slips is useful for traffic reports though, as mentioned before in this thread.

Motorway straight onto Motorway would be "M5 (N) J15 M4 (E)", motorway straight onto dual would be "M5 (S) J31 A30 (W)"

I think if you're looking to save space, the inclusion of "-"s could be ditched, although I don't really see space issues myself.

That just looks so confusing to me at first glance! I'm not sure how useful having the "A30 (W)" part is. And what if the ramp serves more than one subsequent road which many do?

I find they break it up a little and make it easier to read - happy to go with the consensus though

M5 (S) J31 Exit
M5 (S) J31 Entry
