Identifying Israel’s most dangerous roads for wildlife
Society for the Protection of Nature, Israel

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel leveraged Waze data to learn where they should focus their efforts on protecting animals

The problem: Every year thousands of animals are killed on Israeli roads by unsuspecting drivers, The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) partnered with Waze to find the best way to protect both animals from drivers across the country.

The solution: Each time an Israeli driver reported a dead animal on the road using the “Roadkill” report, SPNI received the location information. After analyzing 11,500 reports in six months (Dec 2016-May 2017), SPNI found the most dangerous spots were along major highways close to Israel’s population centers.

So what now? In June 2017, SPNI presented its finding to the Israeli Parliament’s Science Committee. They are now developing solutions that will help protect the wildlife in these dangerous areas.
