Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) implemented a nationally recognized award-winning program to mine Waze data to update internal departmental construction and maintenance systems, improving quality control, research, and analysis.
WASD-Waze notifications are provided daily, helping thousands of drivers in Miami-Dade County reach their destination using the best possible routes by detouring around WASD construction projects. Leveraging hundreds of WAZE notifications, the department has cleaned up dozens of project statuses and digitized missing projects in GIS. Projects currently being reported include Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and Developer Donation Projects.
At any given point there can be hundreds of active projects. Dashboards and an internal GIS portal have been created to ensure staff compliance with Waze reporting and to highlight potential quality issues with internal systems. WASD is also in the process of including all utility maintenance roadway projects. These notifications will continue to improve travel routes and keep all construction project related information current.
