Taking preventative measures against flooding
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In an effort to combat a history of extreme flooding during the rainy season, Rio de Janeiro took preventative measures to fix the most problematic flooding hotspots. After geocoding flood location data collected from local agencies and social media outlets over seven months, Rio used a geographic processing tool to find correlations among traffic information from Waze and the high risk flood spots.

  • Rio plotted 43 critical and 192 non-critical flood spots, 124 of which were on high-traffic streets.
  • The city used this data to fix the most problematic areas and as a result, has had three years without major flooding.
