Updating the base maps at LaGuardia Airport
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

The Port Authority of NY and NJ (PA) operates Major bridges, tunnels, ports, airports, and bus terminals in the greater New York City area, as well as the World Trade Center and the PATH heavy rail system.

In addition to receiving training on all of Waze’s web-based map editing tools, PA worked with the Map Editing Community to make significant map updates to LaGuardia Airport and implement a communications channel so that Community leaders are notified of ongoing updates. This results in accurate navigation to all airport customers navigating with Waze.

For more information, check out PA’s April presentation on the Portal > Resources tab > CCP Monthly Call > April 2017.

Impact

  • The Community updated the airport’s base maps, adding taxi/FHV only roadways, turn restrictions, structures, parking lots and new roadways. The Community updated the Waze voice navigation prompts (through roadway segment renaming) to align with new guide signs.
  • During winter storm Stella, PA worked with the Community to alert drivers to road changes, such as speed limit reductions, by adding hazards that align with variable messaging signs (VMSs).
