I even did a quick review of the section on this subject, and it seems things have been relaxed a bit. Here it is:

Area Place should always be used with the “Gas Station” category and must cover the gas station area, but it must not touch nearby roads, being restricted to the actual functional area of the station. The station’s internal roads are the only ones that should cross it and must be classified as described below;
