I would like to see either the zoom level based on speed of travel.
IE: Driving on a highway (non-rush hour) would give you a farther out view.
Driving residential or downtown where the speeds are lower, a closer in view.
Or… put a max zoom out setting on the auto pan that is in place now. Having it zoom out as far as it does on my commute doesn’t look nice
I think 2 zoom modes are better.
If you’re free driving, I can agree with the zoom related to the road speed.
But if you’re following directions, the zoom has to be related to the distance to the next turn. This way, even if you’re on a freeway and going fast, it actually zooms in when you’re approaching your exit.
I agree completely. I like the way it currently handles autozoom during routing–it shows the next turn and often goes out far enough to see other Wazers
However, I often find myself wishing it’d zoom farther out when I’m travelling without navigation. It was okay on the 3D map, but I’ve started using the 2D map again as it looks cleaner; the default zoom on the 2D map is much too close in. Perhaps for surface streets it’s okay, but on thoroughfares it should be two or three levels out.
I’ve had two navigation systems before Waze, and they each handled zooming differently:
My Garmin had two zoom levels; it would zoom pretty far out at 60 mph and back in at 45.
My TomTom has probably three or four zoom levels, based on road type. Residential streets were pretty close in, thoroughfare-type streets were farther out but you could still read the names of the cross-streets, and freeways would zoom out rather far, showing nothing but freeways and the streets it connected to via exits.
On both systems, once the next turn showed up on screen at that particular zoom level, the map would start zooming in just like Waze does. I do like Waze’s auto-zoom function, but I also see the benefit of the other systems; it’s nice to be able to see where you are even when navigating. Optimally, we’d have the option to select between the zoom algorithms: “Show next turn”, “Show set distance”, or “AutoZoom off”.
That would be nice. I just realized there may be a bug and I just thought it was the app behavior. If you zoom manually, while not routing, you can set any zoom level. But then if you touch the screen (iphone) to pan the map, there doesn’t seem to be any way to recenter while maintaining zoom level. If you press the find me option, it centers your car, but also goes back to default zoom.
I would like to see an autozoom feature based on the roads you are navigating, not so much the speed or the distance. I know some roads that are smaller and have a lot of sidestreets that I am interested in seeing go away once I pass 30 mph. It would be nice if it could autozoom based on the street type or location.
