Boston Big Dig routing problem

When traveling from Charlestown to points west (Newton most of the time), the option of taking 93 South to 90 West by way of the tunnel is never offered although it is frequently faster by as much as 10 minutes compared to other offered routes. This appears to be due to loss of vehicles signals as they go into the tunnel, thereby not registering in the traffic flow. Local knowledge can guide drivers to use this quicker option but the app would be better if it could capture these drivers emerging only 90 West and assessing speed of transit. Not sure if that can be done without some guesswork.

I’ve been struggling with this one too, for a long time. Even tonight I will be coming from the North Shore to South Station - ideally Waze should route me down 93 to Albany Street, however a lot of the time it tries to route me off at Purchase Street then back on to 93 to Albany Street. I know I can save about 5-8 minutes by just staying on Rt. 93, but Waze has a hard time grasping this because I’m “lost” for so long.

You both have correctly identified a major part of this being the tunnels and loss of GPS, luckily there is a solution on the horizon with Waze Beacons which would provide signals to our poor little phones in tunnels. Now once that is implemented… Soon… We can debug any other issues that may exist. But remember waze is a tool to assist with your driving it’s not perfect but understanding it’s limitations such as tunnels will greatly help you be the most efficient driver out there.

Boston is getting Waze Beacons? This is news to me.

No, there’s no announced plan for that.

Yeah Boston would have to shell out the money to install those beacons and sounds like the MBTA this week needs the money more.
