Happy New Year!
I have added a new sheet there to record the lost cities and towns in my edit area.
Hope this would not make confusion to you.
Thanks a lot, I will see what can be done!
I checked with the Geo team and itās unfortunately impossible to rename these towns automatically.
The only way is to mark all relevant segments and rename the city name for them.
Okay, if possible, I will rename those segments after you lock down the name format and the finish map cleanup.
Well, we still need to confirm how to name city and street. Ok let use this example.
City = å
夓åøéå±±åŗ
Street = é¢é大č”
In City field, I have a feeling that most people prefer to use Chinese only.
In Street field, Definitely Chinese only.
Why isnāt anyone talking about the āalternative nameā
Well, possible āalternative nameā doesnāt show in the app and not really help the search.
Iāve not tested on alternative name searching. If itās the case, alternative name is completely useless. How come the feature isnāt used anywhere?
In google map, it will display English street name when locale is English (not Chinese), but thereās no āLocaleā property for name in Waze even thereāre more than alternative names can be added
Hi Guys,
There is currently no use for alternate names in terms of search.
They only apply as a helping tool for comparing routes and avoiding detours, in the future we might enable them in the search.
Thanks
Thank MapSir. You bet me to reply it  . IIRC, the alternative name on āplaceā does not help in term of search too.
Hello everyone, Iām a bit confused.
I started editing Lhasa, but I stopped to avoid having to redo everything anew.
Can anyone have a look at this permalink? https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=row&lon=91.03272&lat=29.64654&layers=165&zoom=5&segments=272638402
Given that likely Tibet will be added by Waze, as you can see from this segment Iāve found already edited: Chengguan (district), Lhasa (city) and China (country). Is that correct? I think so. There might be the same streets in the Xigaze Prefecture, but Iād like to be sure about it.
Additionally, Iām writing the translation in AN to avoid confusion.
Hi,
I am an expatriate arrived 6 month ago in China for minimum of 3 years. I am taking Chinese lessons 3 hr per week since 4 months. Let me bring my 2 cents to this discussion.
Well, I wonder if I should be consider as a visitor despite the fact I may stay here for 6 years. For sure I can recognize Road Chinese Name told navigation mode, but definitively I think Iāll never be able to enter Chinese Characters for a search.
I cannot agree
This is not correct. In Shenzhen, most of the main streets have English name displayed under the Chinese name.
I think this is the solution. And as an editor not mastering Chinese, I really need rules to continue edition in China.
I confirm this is acceptable
This is to be solved.
Hi mikesierra83!
First of all welcome to our China group of editors, glad to have you onboard.
As we currently donāt have the right systems developed to support dual language street names itās best to stick with the official local language.
If you travel to Russia or Israel (and almost any other country) you will not see English road names.
Thanks
Hi mikesierra83,
Welcome and thanks for your opinions. Iāll not against to use Chinese/English format on Street name as I believe in Shanghai, Shenzhen or other big cities in China. Most of the street are using Chinese/English format and it seems too aggressive to force all editors to change them back. However, please stick with the guideline for the time being until Waze develop the multi-language system.
Cheers,
Leo
In Hong Kong, āEnglish Chineseā appears to be working. āChinese Englishā should work in China. Is anyone experiencing issues?
Well, basically the argument some Chinese Wazers raised is there is no official English street name. It may be OK in Big cities but not in small cities. Different people have different translations. Different resources have different translation too.
ktheyes has an example:
Thatās fair enough. Critical that the Chinese names are correct. As Waze is live the English names can be reviewed , edited, corrected and refined over time and with local knowledge as consistent approaches are developed. In many cases there will be no right answer. Try, fail, adjustā¦

Right! So no harm to add English name though. ![]()
Just a thought! If Waze can add a field āEnglish Street Nameā below āAlternative Street Nameā and make it searchable, it will be ideal.
