[FR] Wrong translation for radar section

Describe the problem*:
Since one month ago, Waze Android App announces that you are about to enter into a “radar tronçon” (one camera at the beginning of the zone, another at the end, and it measures the average speed between) instead of a “zone de contrôle” (only one speed trap anywhere in the area).
The translation was correct until December 2025.
The voice and the UI now show the wrong terminology.

Note: I cannot modify myself translation since my registration on Transifex has been rejected a long time ago.

There is also a difference There is also a difference between an “oral” announcement and a “written” announcement. It was announced orally as “section control radar” and in writing as “average speed radar”.

Hi @TOMHTML

We’re looking into the translation issue you reported, but we need a bit of help pinpointing the source. I’ve reviewed our French string libraries, but I haven’t been able to find a direct match for “radar tronçon.”

Could you please provide a screenshot of exactly where you see this in the app? If possible, sending logs would also be incredibly helpful for our investigation.

Best regards,

Nelson

Hello,
Sorry for the misunderstanding, the words “section control radar” were announced verbally.

I’m not sure what was displayed on the screen; I’ll try to take a screenshot on my next trip, when there’s less snow on the roads.

Hi,

I’ve got the same issue with all radar zones I’ve crossed this week-end. I’ve submitted logs as required.

Important : the message displayed on screen is wrong too, it shows “zone de vitesse moyenne” (average speed zone).

@TOMHTML Thank you!

That will definitely help our investigations, please provide screenshots if they are available.

Hi @TOMHTML

Our team is currently working on the translation for “Average speed zone.” Right now, the app uses “Zone de vitesse moyenne,” but we want to make sure we’re using the term that feels most natural to drivers.

In your opinion, would “Radar tronçon” be a more accurate or common term to use here, or is there another phrasing you would recommend?

Thanks for your help!

French legislation states rather “Zone de contrôle”.

Hello @Nelson-Staff

When this issue will be solved ?

Since 2 or 3 versions this issue appears.

Regards,

Hi @Nelson-Staff

To sum up :

  • one speed trap somewhere in the area : Zone de contrôle
  • one speed trap at the beginning of the zone, and another one at the end : Radar tronçon, which is more popular than radar de vitesse moyenne, while both are recognized as official names.
  • if you don’t know : Zone de contrôle

I don’t know if Waze maps can distinguish between these two types of speed cameras. The official speed camera map in France does.

Hi @TOMHTML

Thanks for your patience. Our French community translation team has reviewed the string “Average speed camera.”
They will be keeping the translation “Radar tronçon” to remain compliant with French legal requirements, which mandate that cameras be announced as enforcement zones.

Best regards,
Nelson

Hi @Nelson-Staff ,

We all agree that “radar tronçon” is the correct translation for “average speed camera.”

The issue is that not all speed traps are average-speed cameras! According to the official map, there are:

  • 3,000 static radars (“fixed”, “red-light radar”, etc.)

  • 68 average-speed radars

Average-speed cameras are the exception, not the main type!
Therefore, if your maps do not provide specific details about each radar, the general term “zone de contrôle” is the best choice.
